2018 Nevada State Long Range Championship

ok, here's some info that was just sent out about the match...
  • When you arrive, go immediately to the 1000 yard long range parking lot. This is the first parking lot you’ll encounter after you exit from Pyramid Highway. We’ll have some signage up to direct you.
  • Get signed in and collect your competitor packet. For those pre-registered, we’ll have your scorecards already filled out.
  • Safety briefing will begin at 8:00. Please don’t be late for this.
  • Due to parking limitations in the pits and to make the match move efficiently, we will be requesting that target pullers carpool to the pits. We’ll also have some transportation available to shuttle people back and forth. For those driving remember – 25 MPH on the main road and 15 in the parking lots – these are posted speed limits. Please obey them!
  • There are port-a-potty facilities in the pits and in the parking lot at the 1000 yard line. A full bathroom is available near the public firing range.
  • Ice chests with water will be available in both the pits and the firing line – for those unfamiliar with the high desert climate, be warned, you can become easily dehydrated. Drink up!
  • Speaking of high desert climate… the weather here can be a little unpredictable. Be prepared for anything and everything, sometimes all at once. The 1000 yard firing line is covered, but sun protection is always a good idea.
  • Eye protection is required in the pits while pulling targets. A hat with a brim is highly recommended.
  • Food will not be provided at the match.
  • Click on this link for a google map route to get to the range from Sparks, NV. If you are navigating with another app, use the search term “Washoe County Regional Shooting Facility“. If you are navigating the old fashion way, the directions to the range are simple: From I-80, exit NV-445N/Pyramid Way and drive North for 32 miles. You’ll see the entrance on the left. There is literally NOTHING else around.

For those coming in from out of town and arriving Friday, we'll have the range open most of the day to accommodate people's travel schedule. If you are not able to arrive first thing in the morning, please give us a heads-up as to when you'll be arriving. We'll get you onto the firing line ASAP.

What is the mirage like in the thinner air? Heavy, easier to see?

thats a good question. I couldn't tell you if the mirage is different because of the altitude - the only real differences I see depend on how much cloud cover there. Its definitely not like Ben Avery with the blacktop road running through the middle of the range that heats up. The terrain between the firing lines is very natural and all roads are dirt. We do have some interesting features around the range - such as inconveniently placed berms, updrafts from rapidly heating ground, and a massive lake that creates enough cool air that it interplays with the conditions on the range.

... but when the sun is out, the mirage is very readable....

Today was wet and cold, was able to get out 8 rounds. But got soaked, had to pull my equipment once i made a couple 10 xs. Tomorrow looks real good, never really got to finish fire forming. So will be doing this during the match. Hope my puller will be happy with rounds flying one after another should be a 40 - 50 stringer.

Thanks for putting on great event!

Saturday was windy, cold with some drizzle.
- Winds came from the right, it came from the left - and seems to come from everywhere at once.

Sunday was warmer, no rain but worse winds!
One picture shows the flags point in different directions.
I think they went through all possible combinations, sometimes in the same relay

This is a though range. Once you think you have a handle on it, something changes. And not gradually.

There are probably several things that contribute to the wind swirls;
- Big mountain behind the targets probably force wind to come around it from both sides, creating a melting pot of competing winds, bumping on ridges. Probably with different temperatures too.
I'm sure I don't know what's going on.

With every relay having a unique wind behavior, it would have been nice to have all of the shooters from each discipline squadded together.

I hope to be back - there is definitely something to be learned here!

Cheers,
Nik

Thanks for coming up to shoot with us. We learned a lot about holding matches and will incorporate many of the suggestions into the Match next year.

You have a great description of our challenging range. We never know what to expect when we arrive at the range. We hope everyone had a great time shooting. Thanks to all!

Nik thanks for coming up to shoot at our range.
Where you on 19? I was pulling 20, and my buddy was pulling on 19 we never got to meet the people shooting 19.

Yes, I and another CA shooter was on 19.
The 4 relay system kept us apart, only passing on the road for pit-changes.

Day one in the pits, we could see the waves pick up on the puddle of water, and then change directions and see how that made the spotters move erratically.
And at that time thinking; I'm glad I'm not on the line, but then it was out turn to get the treatment.

The social aspect aside, I also think if there are enough targets to run just 3 relays, our days would have been a little shorter.
- 3 relays x 30min x 3 matches vs 4 relays x 30min x 3 matches.
But that could also make it harder to allow staffers to shoot.

Cheers,
Nik
