Flash Hole Issues with Winchester 284 Brass!!!

My son in laws both bought 400rds of new Winchester 284 brass from Cablea's and when they started to prep their brass they found that the flash holes are crap!! They are oblong or oversized like they were drilled or punched crooked and then redone. Out of 400rds of brass there were only about 100 cased that were "Usable". When we took it back to Cabela's they had a couple of hundred rounds on the shelf that were the same way!!! Has anyone else found this in their brass???

Same thing with 243 brass. Loaded them and shot them. Could not tell the difference, both shot small groups between .250 and .267

I'll know soon. I bought about 400 cases also.

Wow!! I find that hard to believe but stranger things have happened I guess!! My son in laws group nearly doubled!! on the ones he shot.

I bought 300WM brass recently, same issue with more than half and also had pleats in the necks and shoulders. One piece is pleated so badly the neck is fully folded in and not usable.

QC is non existant.

Cheers.

What the hell is going on with Winchester??? How can they even let this out the door let alone sell this crap!!!

I just bought 100 220 swift brass and it was perfect the flash holes square, and true, no dings, dents, folds, no spots.

Winchester brass has been like this for years....some good lots, but many more bad ones. Oh and good luck getting ahold of someone at Winchester who actually cares...

You need to remember "You get what you Pay For"
True, but after buying Norma brass in the same cartridge and finding primer pockets opening at 55,000psi loads, I no longer want soft brass.
Winchester and Lapua are the hardest brass cases available.
I still have all 300 Lapua 300WM cases I bought in the 80’s, not one has split and I’m still using the initial 100 batch I started with and have sized them 17 times...in custom dies of course.
The Winchester brass is for my match chambered hunting rifle, it lasts the longest at max pressures.

Cheers.
:)

Yeah, but you bought it in the 80's. I have a bag of 25-06 and 7mm Rem Mag of Win brass that I am dreading having to open.

Winchester has been this way for at least a decade now. It’s mostly garbage now and I’d only buy Winchester if it’s the sole maker. Hopefully there will be more and more small makers providing high quality brass in niche markets as Winchester and Remington fade out.

To expand on my previous comment. I’m happy paying three times the Winchester price for brass that lasts three times the firings and I don’t have to throw any new brass into the trash. The savings in prep work and frustration make it a bargain to buy brass from Lapua , Peterson , Bartam , and the like. Back when 7mm WSM first came out I bought some Winchester brass for it and it was as good as any brass I’ve ever bought which tells me Winchester knows how to make quality brass but chooses not to.

Just checked my 50 pieces of 25-06 and 50 pieces of 7mm Rem Mag Win brass and everything looked good for the most part.

One piece of the 25-06 had a dinged shoulder and mouth.

Once piece of the 7mm had a dinged shoulder and another seemed to have missed the trimming section of the line.

I'll shoot them all.

From everything I've read on other forums, Winchester sold off their brass making business about a decade ago and simply buys their brass from lowest cost supplier. Hornaday still makes at least some of their own brass, but may also buy from other suppliers when demand is high. Federal deliberately makes their 308 brass soft, because it shoots better and more consistently, but makes for poor hand loading due to loose primer pockets after only one or two loads. However Federal 223 brass is among the hardest and can be hand loaded dozens of times based upon personal experience.

Wow, I had no idea that Winchester had gone down hill so bad. All my 284 brass is older Winchester and it has been really good brass. I have basically two weights of it but other than that it shoots really well.

5 ish years ago I had a batch of 300WM Winchester brass that looked like these, I fired them all once before case prep, all but a few with the folds on the shoulders turned out fine... the dented necks look ugly but once put though a full length die and fired they straighten out fairly easily..
