Action what one?

Bart, you shot small group and send target to Krieger and you used a single shot action! Why didn't you use Win if it's so great.

here is your post

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rec.guns/iL7zv-cktJc

this is what you used

used a .308 Win. with Sierra's 155-gr. Palma bullet with 45.3gr. of
IMR4895 and RWS Primers in full-length sized WCC60 match cases. Had a 20X
scope on the English Paramount action and shot prone with a bag under my
front hand to steady the rifle. It was about 6AM in dead-calm wind
conditions.

BB

Wrong Bart. Bart Sauter just set the new record not Bart B.

When Palma match rules require everyone shoot the same issued lot of new ammo, a 4 lug action typically shoots their bullets more accurate. Case heads on such ammo can be a bit out of square and shots tend to string horizontally with 2 lug bolts in battery at 12 and 6 o'clock. M1 and M14 match rifles string reloaded fired cases from them 1 to 7 o'clock with their lugs in battery at 4 and 10 o'clock; their bolt faces were never squared up.

That's why two British 'smiths in the early '70's designed the 4 lug Swing single shot action to shoot issued 7.62 M80 ball ammo in their long range Fullbore matches. The arsenal ammo required had case heads out of square enough that was easily seen to string in their SMLE rifles chambered for NATO ammo that was more accurate than their rimmed 303 ammo. Such stringing went away in 4 lug actions. That's why I bought the Paramount 4 lug single shot action.

Most other British Commonwealth country's rifle associations soon followed suit. The Stolle and other 3 wide lug actions are their equal. South Africa's Musgrave 2 lug single shot action based on the Mauser 98 design was probably the best and it shot their arsenal ammo good enough to equal that from Great Britian shot in Swing actions.

Once new cases are fired in 2 lug actions with squared up bolt faces, their heads are squared up and stay that way over dozens of reload - shoot cycles.

I like the Kelbly actions because of the bbl interchangeability ,cone breaching wich gives flawless ctg feeding,, and the choice of load and eject port configuration making chcling of the acton effortless,,,,,,,Roger

I think I might jump off the Remmy footprint for the next build and do a Panda. But then I am totally relying on a smith to build my rifle. And today I can buy all the parts and build them myself. Which has served me very well so far.

One advantage to going to the Panda action would be that Kelbly can make a new barrel sight unseen and does not need your gun.

The NBRSA many group agg records at 1000 yards are about 4/10 to 5/10 MOA. IBS 1000 yard many group agg records are in the 5/10 MOA range. Some groups are naturally smaller and others obviously larger. To me, the record setters are about 6/10 to 7/10 MOA at best. All the others averaged and maxed out bigger.

They must not do 1/4 MOA very often.
The IBS and Williamsport records are a lot smaller then NBRSA. Matt

Here's Williamsport current records:

http://www.pa1000yard.com/hof-recs/records.php

The 10 group agg's are not a lot smaller, just statistically equal.
They are a lot smaller, you can't compare light becuase we shoot 10 shots and not 5, so our groups get bigger. In heavy the single target record in NBRSA is 3.99 and Williamsport 2.815.

In 6 target score, ours is 594 and theirs is 571. That is alot for 6 targets.
6 target group ours is 5.0 and theirs is 5.96 that is alot for a 6 target agg.
I believe some of them IBS records are smaller.
I think they also shoot more targets in a season and throw more out. We only shoot 10 and throw none. If your gun isn't capable of shooting 1/4 MOA or smaller, you are not going to win much. Matt

All will do that once in a while. How often is something else. With the many 10 shot group record agg's the size they are, 1/4th MOA and smaller are about as common as those 6/10ths MOA and bigger

NO, they will not all shoot a 2" ten shot group sometimes. Its only happened in a match 4 times in history. There are no accidental small 10 shot groups at 1000 yards. And once again, aggs do not represent what a gun can do in ideal conditions. They are an average of your whole season in what ever conditions you have to shoot in.

I guess then I'm the Black Sheep. I used a Tikka M695 long action. Bartlien 28 inch barrel installed by LRI in Montana. When I questioned him about trying the action he laughed and said the 695 off the shelf was as true as it is going to get. I did have them install a good solid tombstone barrel lug. It is not moving in the stock. I used a Richard's stock and worked shaping it for ne. And it is in 6.5x55. So far a nice rifke that I have not even broke the barrel in yet. Just 20 rounds so far.

Well stated. Sometimes semantics gets in the way.

Would be interesting if all the record holders shot a match at 5 am in pristine conditions.
Bart,,at 5 AM,some of us will be creaking and joints popping just trying to get up and get coffee, and now you want us to get to a range and shoot,,better to make it 7 or 8,,

We freely choose the conditions and objectives for shooting. I'm weak in reading the wind so testing loads for accuracy in zero wind speeds eliminates that variable.

After I laid out the 1000 yard rifle range near Byers, CO using survey instruments in 1985, the wind that day convinced me windage knobs would get well used.
