Case Trimmers: Please can you help?

I have the RCBS with 3 way cutting head.

My friend wants to buy a case trimmer and is interested in the Trimit 2.

I am drawn to the Trimit 2 for 2 reasons: -

i) it indexes off the case shoulder (therefore giving a consistent neck length, therefore a consistent neck tension [every thing else being equal])

ii) There is no mandrel interfering with the neck of the case. I have noticed that after resizing and then during trimming, the RCBS is a tight fit in the neck and I think this could effect neck tension?

I would be very grateful for your critique/advice.

+2 on the Wilson. You are correct about using mandrels in the case mouth for trimming. I am more concerned with case length from head to case mouth due to rifle chamber length (too much = carbon ring) than I am about a few thousandths difference in neck length making a measurable difference on target.

I just purchased a Trim-it II about a month ago and once it is adjusted correctly it doesn't take long to do a lot of trimming. I am getting ready for a PD shoot and have trimmed about 2000 223's. I like it! I have never seen the Wilson or the Girarud trimmers.

I have the Giraud and the Trim-it II. Both work on the same principal. The cutters appear to be identical to me. They both work well, are very accurate and fast. Trimming to length, chamfering and deburring all in one operation is very nice. The Trim-it has the advantage in my opinion because it's a bit easier to adjust and it is not caliber specific. The caliber dies are only $20. The newer ones have a lexan cover to capture the flying chips. Very nice product.

++3 on the trimit-II it works really well and is very east to control results - get the drive for it as well - that was an afterthought for me but sure beats rigging a drill up to drive it.

Wilson with the Sinclair upgrades - precise and easy to use. Been using mine for over 10 years - it's perfect for me.

I note your point re case length, but surely the amount of contact with the bullet will have an effect on the grip of the bullet? I use a bushing die (.336) but if the length of the neck is variable, then the tension is accordingly?

I use a Forster trimmer with Forster's 3in 1 trimmer head. Trims champhers and deburrs all in one operation. Does an excellent job. So much so that I have a separate unit for each cartridge and I run the cases through the trimmer at every loading. It's easy, fast and accurate and gives me, in my opinion, the best consistency.

If you maintain a 0.001" to 0.002" shoulder bump, and diligent about keeping the case OAL with-in 0.002" ( https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=jack+neary+benchrest+) you will never measure the difference in neck tension in the resulting range of actual neck lengths.

I use the Forster with base that mounts to my drill press. I have all the 3 way cutter heads. can do 10 cases per minute once its set up
