LR AR's

A bunch of years ago the IBS (I think) was going to try an "AR" class in 1000 BR. Did anything ever come of that?

Just curious,

Tod

yes it was short range.
they wrote a set of rules that was designed to kill the class from the start.

there is no requirement that brass stay on your bench for the 4 current classes in br,
but for some stupid reason an ar had to keep its brass on the bench.
what they need was a rule that said your brass cannot land on anyone else's bench.

Reason likely was to keep somebody from holding up heats trying to find their custom brass among the discards. Also 22 bullets at AR speeds are in trouble with any wind.

or more likely br shooters writing rules to ensure no competitors.

is 3500-3600 fps fast enough for you ?
not every ar shooter shoots 55 fmj's from a 16" chrome lined bbl.

That is not it at all. Most of us Semi-automatic shooters while we do not like loosing brass it is par for the course unless you use a brass catcher.

I do not remember all of the rules but they did seem to me to be this. Give the AR shooters a chance but make the rules even worse than the current set so we can shut them up and make them go away.

Nobody was ever threatened by an ar in benchrest at any range. Nothing breaks your concentration more than hot brass going down the neck of your shirt. There hasnt been nor will there ever be an ar that can be competitive with a benchrest rifle. I know i know theres ar rifles that shoot zeros all day long if you do your part but none have ever been to the range when i was there. Why not allow glocks to compete? How about slingshots? Bows?

dusty,
your reply is common of people who do not understand tuned competitive ar's.
does your bench gun throw brass like a hunting gun ?
no..because it is setup for bench shooting.
ar's have tuneable ejectors.
my ar-10 puts the brass in the port...not on your neck on the next bench.
the only rule needed was your brass cannot touch another bench /shooter..
i saw the part about ultimate rifle accuracy. i DID NOT see the part about bolt guns only.

I have a couple of finely tuned ar rifles- one was no expense spared- and no matter how good it shoots it will never shoot with even a marginally tuned br rifle. Its just not designed for that. In a match where only ar rifles are allowed one will be competitive but even shooting 3 shot groups against 5 in any ppc at a match the ar just wont make it. Id like to be proven wrong as im sure not a gas gun hater (far from it actually)

ask bib about the 0.116 shot with his 134's in an ar10.

We shoot an AR class match next to the traditional BR bolt guns for a club steel match at 600 yards. Shot off a bench. I think only one actually shoots a .223. The rest shoot some other wildcat 6 or 6.5mm case. They shoot very well indeed. Some, on a good day can hold a 5 shot group in the 3" to 4" range at 600. Have to be careful when you use the term AR;). I am thinking of putting one together in the 6AR turbo chambering.

shooting steel is not br shooting, not even close. my stock ar10t from armalite will do that.

He didn't say it was BR shooting. He said they shoot from benches. Not the same thing.

Come on out and show us what you can do. I've got $100 that says you can't hit twenty in a row.

what i pointed out was THIS thread was about AR's and BENCHREST...
not shooting steel.

Sorry...I was away form this post for a couple of days. It WAS NOT short range....it was 1K...but...maybe it was just the Harris range that talked about it, not the IBS. This was back when I was actively shooting...sometime between 2008 and 2013.

No biggy...something just made me think about it the other day.
