I just bought a new upper receiver and hand guard for the purpose of building a 20 Practical. Mr Whitley builds some fine shooting uppers. His website (6mmar.com) will give you an idea of their value and you can search his name here for some idea of his contribution to the shooting world.

My vote - buy it and enjoy it

I would also consider the excellent uppers build by Precision firearms in the 204 ruger

I don't know anything about Robert.
An ar-15 in 20 Practical is handier than the word shi#
You will love it.

Not sure if y'all like that word as much as I do but that is one testimonial right there :p

Whitley builds good uppers. You might also want to check out Whiteoak Armament. I recently bought one of their uppers for $700.00 in .22 Nosler and I was very impressed with both the materials and accuracy. I do believe they have .20 Practical as well. They build rifles for successful competitors and they know what they are doing.

I'm looking for prairie dog guns and this one might do.

My comments mean no disrespect to Robert Whitley in any manner. I have looked at his uppers, and in my mind I just can't justify the cost vs. the benefit you gain.

I can purchase my barrel of choice, the upper I want, the remainder of the components I want, and have my PD gun. I haven't seen any benefit in group size of the Whitley upper. And I have spent about half of the cost. But I don't expect my decision and judgement to bias yours.

Robert Whitley (Fred @ Sabreco is machinist/gunsmith) - great uppers. I have owned and sold a 6mmAR - great shooting rifle, sold - mistake. Bought another.
They are very well put together, especially for an AR. mine - bolt face trued/squared, then headspaced. good machining and detailing.
very carefully chambered, so far as I can tell. highest quality barrels. Sure the .20 is as well. fwiw.

i built several precision AR's with the best of components.

then i bought a 6mm AR turbo 40 upper from Robert. that rifle shot bugholes. put everything else i had to shame. Funny thing is it wasn't picky at all. shot everything well. Robert sells the dies and if you will use his recommended load recipes very little load development is required. no doubt robert knows all the tricks to building an accurate AR.

here is a pretty typical 5 shot 100 yrd group

I bought a new RW upper in .20 P a few years back and put it on about the cheapest lower I could find with a Geissele trigger. Been using IMI and Remington once fired brass, VV133, BR4s, BKs, Vmax & BIBs. Great upper, extremely accurate AR. With regards to the OP, $1400, if it had a decent lower and trigger, it was a fair price. Can one be built cheaper? Sure but not everyone has those skills. For an off the shelf upper, RW makes good stuff.

The only thing that interests me are the side charging handles. Eye problem dictates I have to use a scope and the side handle would really be nice.

They are expensive... But I build my own and spent the same amount of money on quality parts. If not more..

Id say price out what you want quality wise.. Then compare it... that will tell you..

Well I am really impressed. If that is typical, it way out performs mine.

Regarding side charging handle, I have considered going to it, but the thought of removing it, every time I pull the bolt out of the rifle puts me off. Something as simple as checking the bore for obstructions before I fire it at the range. And a lot of the reviews I read folks complain about the bolt attaching the side charging handle coming loose when firing it. Am I being mislead?

yep it is that consistent. now it has a billet lower with a really nice fit to the upper, a Geissele national match trigger, a PRS stock and i use my benchrest front rest and bags. i can do better with my bench guns but for an AR that is exceptional.

built several heavy barrel ARs and used them with that same lower. Shilen barrels, kraiger barrels, 20", 24". used all the tricks. best i could ever do was a consistent .5 to .6 moa. now this is with carefully crafted handloads.

i really like the side charger. much easier to operate than an AR charging handle. have never had any problems with mine except it took a while to start to remember that i had to remove the handle before removing the bolt carrier. just added the allen wrench to my cleaning kit as a reminder and after that remembering was easy.

Mr Coody, That's a dam nice group! I have some similar targets - w 3 rounds tho. from a 6MMAR. R Whitley & Co build great uppers.

JEPP2- I have 3 side chargers. 1 .223 (built by Fred - Sabreco), 1 6MMAR, and 1 that I just built using Alex Arms bolt carrier (.223).

The handles have never come off, yeah a bit of a pain, but remove w an allen key in 5 secs...
Side bolts are great for varmint shooting; easier to keep in position to drop mag & pull handle.

Young Mfg makes a nice bcg, complete, fyi.
