Peterson Brass question...

Im very glad they started. Now they just need 220russian and 6br to take over the world. Nobody buys as much brass as ppc shooters. May be less of em out there as a whole but we’re the only ones that go thru brass so fast we dont even have to anneal or clean it. Ill go thru 40pcs in a weekend 2 gun match and 80-90 if its got an unlimited 10shot 4 gun

I'm curious how many shots are on a single piece of brass after a weekend two gun match?

-- Scott

Well theres 5 record shots on 5 targets for each gun agg. Each target takes from 7-15 shots. A practice day or 2 before may be 100 shots if youre not having luck finding a load. Each piece has to be formed too.

They are its just a proprietary chambering like a grendel so you get it from the dude that invented it

It's not proprietary: it's a CIP standardized cartridge. Incidentally, the 6.5 Grendel isn't proprietary anymore either: it's been SAAMI standardized (haven't checked on CIP).

Youre thinking of the grendel 2 which is what everybody sells except alexander arms. They have a patent on the compound throat version which is what in reality brought on the lbc chamber. I dont think they enforce it or anything anymore but you used to sign an agreement if you bought a grendel reamer that if you marked a barrel grendel you paid a royalty. All kinds of ways to get around it. I still have an original grendel reamer

Like many of you, I decided to give Peterson 308 brass a try this season. I recently ordered and received my order of 308 Win, large primer brass (lot # W1TL0042) and I must say the brass looks absolutely beautiful.

Upon trying to prime the brass with my existing stock of Wolf LR primers, I experience a slight problem. Using my RCBS hand primer, I have to use an extraordinary amount of pressure (using both hands) to seat the primer. So much so, that it deforms the face of the primer. So I have decided to consult the many wise oracles on this forum to see if any have encountered this problem and what their solution was. My first thought was to swage the primer pocket, maybe just a little. I have a Ballistic Tools Primer Pocket Gauge and neither end will go into the primer pocket.

I did pull out my 1" micrometer to measure several samples from my stock of primers. The results are as follows:

Wolf LR primers: .2111"
Federal GMM: .2107"
CCI LR: .2114"
Rem 9 1/2: .2102"
Win LR: .2113"

Any assistance or wisdom is greatly appreciated.

I just wanted to finalize this post with the response back from Ben Preston of Peterson Brass regarding the size of their primer pockets. Below is a quote from his email response. Thank you, Ben, for taking the time to respond.

"We make our brass with a primer pocket diameter of 0.2078” for a reason. Yes they are tight but what we have found is that after the very first firing they will open up to .2085”. So what this allows our customer to achieve is many more reloads before the pockets give out. I assure you it is done on purpose and with a lot of thought behind it. I personally load our brass for my own shooting and not once have I ever had to use 2 hands to seat a primer, they are tight pockets yes but not that tight. Once you shoot them once they will open up enough to allow you to fit your uniforming tool in there if that is what you want to do. They will also open up enough for you to be able to seat future primers in there a lot easier.

In conclusion, ... For the primer pockets we have done extensive talking and research on the our primer pockets and we are not looking to change them. We are however looking at ways to educate the customer on why they are tight and hard to seat for the first firing and why we designed them that way."

Another vote for 220 Russian brass or PPC brass. I contacted Peterson last September and they had no interest. Hopefully things will change over time. Be nice to buy my brass from folks just up the road.

I just fired 20 of the large rifle Peterson brass and have had the opposite problem after brass prep. Of the 20 cases, 3 have such large primer pockets I can put the primer in and watch it fall in. Comes right out. Anyone have that experience?

Interesting and seems sensible.

My experience with my first 50 Peterson cases (260 Rem, large primer). So far, the brass appears good on this small sample but has a larger weight spread than I'd expect from Lapua.

Competition among suppliers is always a good thing, but likely benefits US shooters more than us in the UK. There is nothing much between Lapua and Peterson for us in price, and Lapua availability is much better.

Did you happen to use a same load you had from Lapua brass?

Yep, that's pretty much exactly what I experienced however, the brass I got was early in their production, so they might not have had the production line tuned as well as it is now. Just a guess.

No, I had previously read threads here and noted the comments to back off the load. I started out a full grain lighter than my lapua load which isn't too hot. I had no problems with blown primers or any pressure signs. Just now 3/20 cases that won't hold the primers. Bought bulk of 1000. Hope this is a one off.
