Firing pin travel

Hi,

I'm looking for some tips on measuring firing pin travel and then adjusting it if required? The action has no trigger hanger. It will be a Borden action with a Bix trigger.

Thanks,

.240" or above on Remington style ignitions IF you want Benchrest accuracy. Accuracy issues start to appear in the .220"s. Your Borden should need no adjusting. If it has some cock on close its a simple tweak as its designed right, so no major work is needed.

thanks for this info

Very good post from Jerry Stiller. I agree 100% with his findings.
In general, you want to have about .240 minimum fall on the pin without a primer in it. (hard stop inside bolt) It is hard to make up for travel with spring force or additional weight. Additional weight tends to slow the pin, but helps if there is any drag. Our experience with the standard Rem type of pin is that .220 or less is not very desirable. It is hard to add enough spring or mass to fix that. Small rifle primers from Federal are a little forgiving, but that is kind of our spec. As a note of interest, we bought a bunch of old 308 machine gun ammo to test our actions with. It had HARD primers in them. A factory Rem or Savage wouldnt even reliable fire them. Our Viper with a 20 lb spring and .250 fall wouldnt either. I put a 25 lb spring in it and no go. I made a longer hanger and put .300 fall instead with both springs and it fired like a big dog. That extra .050 made the most difference. If you look at the energy equations, it made sense too. I wouldnt fix a problem you dont have, but extra travel is most effective. Only problem is that a lot of br guys dont like the "Cock on close" feel they get on the bolt when it picks up the trigger at the last moment. I never let that bother me. I prefer it to have enough fall and dont even notice the timing thing anymore so I usually put our hangers on the longer pull setting.

I assume these numbers being quoted for for .080 nominal firing pins. Smaller diameter pins reduce the energy required to punch a good hole significantly.

Nope, small pin. Stillers have a small pin as well. We dont use Remingtons for BR builds anymore, every custom action in common use has a smaller pin .062-.068. I see it often. Have a Panda in the shop now because its never shot well with multiple barrels. .210" fp fall. It was "timed". Its a common problem. I can usually fix them over the phone when a guy calls, just by having them swap trigger hangers. They dont close as nice but they shoot better.

I cannot recall the number, but many years ago, when I inquired regarding a non Borden action, Jim Borden advised me that a little "cock-on-close" is desirable - I know this: all of my Borden BR actions have been delivered with a trigger installed, and featuring a slight, but observable, "cock-on-close" . . . all I've had to do was install a barrel, bed into a decent stock, install a scope, begin shootin', and SMILE.:) Never felt the need to mess with any of them - they have been capable of winning, "right out of the box"! ;) RG

Thank you for your responses. I've measured using a digital calliper the height above the shroud when cocked and below shroud fired and added the two figures to get a total on a Remington for an idea. I don't have the Bix yet, I'm sure all will be well.
