6x47Lapua AND TAC20

I currently have a TAC 20 built on a Stiller Predator action with a Krieger barrel and 11 twist, this is an extended reach rifle on coyotes (in Indiana) that is used when hunting stands provide shots in the 250 – 400 yard range. This has been an exceptional cartridge for that game and distance.

I was recently given Redding 6x47Lapua dies, 6.5 x 47 Lapua cases new, Wilson bullet seater, bullets and powder from a former 6x47L shooter. I’ve never really given much thought or appreciated the cartridges that are north of the .224. I’m a predator hunter and shoot smaller game – coyote, fox, crow, squirrel, etc. But with the recent gifting of the hardware, my interest level is up a notch.

The questions –

Will I be rendering my TAC 20 less useful with the 6x47 Lapua, they appear to overlap quite a bit in terms of accuracy, speed, range?

I was just curious on your thoughts of having both a TAC20 and a 6x47Lapua?

Can I find niches for each rifle?

Would you say the two cartridges have stark differences?

I’d say equally useful at the distances you shoot, and capable out to 1,400 or so yards (depending on bullet).

If you’re only shooting 400 yds at coyotes I don’t think there’ll be much difference except maybe in recoil.

I’ve got an 11 twist Krieger on my 20tac also and have similar results as you—-great calling gun. Don’t know about the 6x47L as I don’t have one yet but I have others. It just seems like I always grab the 20tac. Options are a nice things to have though and fun too.

Get on your ballistic calculator of choice to see the differences.

The two main things are wind drift and energy favoring the 6x47 at the longer distances. Both things that are important when shooting farther out. I used 87 Vmax at 3400fps and 40 vmax at 3700 fps for my comparison. At 400Y there's twice the energy on target and about 6" less wind drift in a 10 mph full value wind for the 6. Windy day, take the 6.

The other two things are explosiveness vs low recoil. 87vmax hits much harder but the low recoil of the 20 cal is fun in a different way, 20's are just so pleasant to shoot.

If you ever get a chance to shoot farther, well you've got your answer.

Good info Steve, thanks for the input!

I shoot both. High volume squirrel shoots, coyotes closer than 500, the 20 is great. Past that the 6 shines.

Both are great rounds.
