6x47Lapua project

Hi all, thought I would share my latest completion. This rifle has been a year in the works and I have had many visits to this board to read and learn all the good info you all share.

It is a RBLP Savage action trued/timed with an 8 twist 27" Douglas barrel by Fred M. of Sharp Shooter Supply. The stock is my own blank I glued up from hickory and birdseye maple. Not sure what wood the tip is, maybe Coa? It was givin to me so thought I would use it. Inlet and shaping was done by Joel Russo from PA. Farrell one pc. base and rings with a Sightron SIII 6-24x50.

I have not had a chance to shoot it yet. Brass is ready and loading equipment is set up to start break in and to get it on paper. Will start with some 105gr Berger VLD's.

Thanks to everyone supplying 6x47L info, it has been a great help. TB

Nice looking rifle. I hope it shoots as good as it looks. I just starting to shoot a 6x47L I had build. So far loads not working for me. Changing powder this weedend hope it does the trick.

Never heard of Padouk, interesting. I almost wish I had enough to do an entire stock. It has a very reddish orange look to it. Almost seems a bit on the oily side when you cut and sand it. TB

Preacher is correct, Joel does nice work. He cut this A-5L style for my 204R a couple winters ago out of the hickory blank I sent him.

He called me when it was finished and asked what I wanted to do with the rest of the wood. I thought there would just be sawdust left but he said there would probably be enough left for another stock. Needless to say the wheels got turning. He sent the blank back, I removed 3/4" from either side and added the birdseye maple and Padouk;) tip. Returned it to him and he came up with the 6x47L stock. The inletting for the new Savage target action was spot on. I had to relieve more wood for the bolt handle throw but a simple deal with a rough cut narrow file and a few minites.

If you are like me and like to do your own blanks and maybe come up with some unusual projects, Joel seems more than willing to work with you. Just be sure to get on his list. I don't think he is getting any less busy! TB

Right at 198rds. down the tube and have settled on this load. Shoots the 107 SMK's well also but the Bergers seem to have them beat. The BR4's seem a bit better than the CCI450 magnum primers also. Things really came together when I got the VLD's just touching the lands.

TOO - Very nice rifle! From the pic of the group, it looks like the Douglas bbl. will shoot just fine. How do you like your SIII? I bought one of the SIII 8-32x56s and liked it, so ordered one of the 6-24s like yours for one of my 6x47s, and have been pleased with it so far.

I've had really good results with DTAC 115s & N160 at 600-1000 out of both my 6x47s - one a Bartlein 8-twist, the other a Krieger 7.5-tw. Have fun with the new rig!

Flatlander.
How do the velocities and vertical compare between the Kreiger and the Bartlein with the same loads?
Thanks
Tony

flatlander, I am pleased with the SIII also however every time I have been able to shoot the 6x47L it has been in the evening and my bench faces to the southwest and the sun has been right in my eye. Fuzzes up a bit on 24x but when the sun is at my back it is nice and clear. I also have a 6.5-20x50SF SII and tracking on both have been right on. TB

Tony,
With the same loads, the barrels produce very similar velocities. But, as you might expect, with a .237" bore 8-twist, the Bartlein will handle warmer loads than the .236" bore 7.5-twist Krieger,. Earlier, I'd posted that it was almost 100fps faster, but most of the chrono work I'd done with the Krieger was during colder weather last winter. Recent RL17 test sessions over a CED Millenium chrono showed considerably less difference between the two, with the Bartlein still a bit faster - with the heavier loads it'll handle. They both shoot excellent groups at 600-1000yds., so the hardest decision I'm facing is what barrel to use in the next 6x47, which will be bedded in a Shehane MBR Tracker stock.
