Someone talk me the hell out of this!! LOL

6.5 x 300 WBY. For ELR STEEL

My LR hunting platform....Older Rem 700 LA in an A-5 stock with an AI 5 round Mag made to fit the 300 WBY case. Currently have a 338 EDGE Tube for that platform that I single feed and a 300 WBY tube that I load short to use the mag. Since the State has made the whitetail deer tag around here near impossible to get anymore, my ever expanding array of steel out to a mile, and my lack of participating in IBS 1K, my interest has moved to steel and prairie dogs.....and it is a 6 hour drive one way to kill dogs!! So...steel it is!!

I already have my fast twist 6mm's in both Dashers and 6-47L. I have a 6.5 x 47L and a 6.5 WSSM. I also have a gaggle of 300 WBY tubes shooting the 200, 215 and 230 hybrid and the 210 VLD's. And my EDGE. Looking for an "inbetweener"....a 264 or 7mm.

I want something to goof of with...something stupid flat and lower recoil than my 300 Wby's and 338 edge. I thought about a 6.5 WSM or 26 Nostler tube, but don't think that they will work in my action without work on the feed rails. I know that the work isn't a big deal to make them feed, but how would the 300 WBY work AFTER I opened it up to make the fatter case work? I NEED the 300 WBY to work..it is my go to for everything with horns....my "old reliable"!!! The 6.5 300 WBY would work just like my 300 WBY does.

Also, I have a pile of RL25, RL33, Retumbo, H1000, etc....just sitting around.

Also thinking that the 7x300 Wby (as opposed to the STW....brass is hard to get and I have the WBY dies already) might also be a good choice, although the recoil with the 195's would be worse than the 140/150 6.5.

I know that I will have less than 1000 rounds of fun, but since I have a bunch of different guns/BBLS already, this will not get shot EVERY time I go out. Like I said...something to goof off with.;)

go for it--you must have thought of 257 Wby. I know you would not have quite the preformance of 6.5-300 -Im gonna build a 257 soon-- its plenty for me in that caliber.

Yep - If your looking for disapproval talk to your wife & girlfriend - Let her know how much its all gonna cost & how the nights out are on hold until the projects completed & fully paid for. - That should possibly get someone a few nights on the couch & that disapproval that your looking for...........

Lol, less than 1000... More like less than 600... And a belted case, yuck.

There, thats my best effort to talk you out of it.

you could shoot PD's with the .338. 6 hour drive- a chance to listen to YOUR favorite tunes...PD's - if you listen carefully, the splat is just a little less audible than steel. 6.5's - yes. so you are looking to rebarrel/new chambering on your Rem 700 LA? you have a good dilemma...

What a coincidence you brought this up. I was talking with 2 of my friends from Montana this past weekend, and they asked me about putting together a couple 6.5X300 Wby barreled actions for them.
I have a 7mmx300 Wby that was built back in the 70's.
I say go for it.

LOL! Not only is he not going to get talked out of it, someone is going to sell him a rifle in this thread!

I have a friend of mine who built something very unique about 20 years ago. FLAT shooting was not the proper terminology>>> almost ZERO drop was more like it! He built a .300 / .416 Rigby! He would shoot 180 Noslers at 3800f.p.s. AND he was loading it down to some degree. With the powders we have now like RL-33 and RL-50, I would bet you could get a "comfortable" 4000f.p.s. with a 180 Hybrid! This may fit your bill about having fun!
I have a different philosophy on "getting what you want".. It goes like this: I ask myself a few questions, like "Will buying this (whatever "this" may be) imperil my finances? Will this purchase adversely effect my savings account to any appreciable degree? And finally will this ill-effect my lifestyle in some way? If the answer is NO, then go get it! If you notice there are no questions about WHY I want or need this>>>>that is of no consequence! If we only bought what we NEEDED we would be of all people most miserable! We buy what we want! PERIOD!!

Buy the darn thing! You will lose more $$$ to to daydreaming about it at work than it costs to buy it! You would be irresponsible not to!

Then post about it!

I have a 7mm RUM that shoots 143 Hammers at 3,600+ with zero recoil and laser flat. I loaded these to burn the barrel out so I could get a faster twist tube for non-lead bullets, but now I have grown fond of it ! Whatever you choose I'm sure it will bring a smile to your face.

I MUST respectfully disagree here. I don't think "imperil finances" and/or "affect my savings account" should even be considered at all.

Tod,

Look at the Hornady 6.5 PRC. Fit's your action w/o opening up the feed rails for the bigger cases.

150 Sierra's in mine stay super sonic to 1950.

If you don’t like the chambering you can always rebarrel after a few hundred rounds.

Yeah, you'll be chasing the throat almost as fast as the speed of light in a 6.5 Weatherby.

Plus bullets will come apart when the barrel gets all cracked which won't be long.

6.5 Saum, it's fast enough and with a 7.5 twist and 147's it ought to do fine in the wind and get decent barrel life with H1000 at 55,000 psi.

28 Nosler won't get great barrel life but a .8BC bullet at 3000 fps won't be no slouch.
