Fast AND accurate neck turning?

Gotta turn several hundred case necks. They’re gonna be thick and will require more than a light shave. I know hand held neck turners like the K&M are very consistent but I’d rather not develop carpal tunnel syndrome. Are there options that will do a good job other than hand-held turners?

The K&M turner, when used with the heat shrink holder & a low rpm drill, it's pretty easy on the mitts. I would never use it just holding the turner body.

The ergo holder is a must, but even then, it's not that hard on your mitts, . It hurts my neck more than anything, staring down at the cutter. Once you get it set up, break it up into 1- hour sessions and it's tolerable.

I use a Dayton right angle gear motor with a rheostat. I can control speed to help with heat and finish. I just j old it with my hand, but I use three turners to take it off in steps. The last one has a new sharp cutter and only takes off .0002. I like turning brass, but hate doing pockets. Matt

Matt, I will do all your pockets, if you do my necks ! ;)

I've done a hundred or more at a time with the K&M will no ill effects. If they are thick, then you should make it in 2 separate cuts. Most on the first cut and then a finishing cut. A slower rpm and a slower feed into the cutter will help with the heat issue. The 21st century mini lathe would be a nice addition but I have more time than money.

I've done it on my lathe. Put the right collet in the spindle to clamp the rim. Use a collet stop to have repeatable depth. Use a very sharp positive rake tool. put the mandrel in the tailstock. Spin it in. For each casing, use DRO to control travel in z axis. Don't touch X axis. Do it at 500 rpm, one pass.

I'm not sure it is faster but it works pretty fast for me since I know the controls on the lathe so well.

speed and heat do NOT always go together.
get a large heat sink and you can use a lot of speed.
mandrel in the jaws of a check on a real lathe is a big heat sink.

Are you saying none of what he said is true up to and including the choice of tools?
