22lr Target Build

I know this is something that's been posted about many times, yet non of the existing threads seem to suit my needs; so here goes. I'm looking to build a precision 22lr bolt action rifle. The first questions is: if one was to use a factory action, what would the recommendation be. So far, the Anschutz 54 match action is what I was thinking. Here in the UK, rifles with said action can be had for less than £300/$420. Next question is barrel brand. Border is was what sprung to mind. Any suggestions or experiences with the components listed would be very much appreciated.
Thanks again,
Josh

A 54 will work, try and find an older, large bolt handle version.
IMHO scrap the Border idea, with a little effort you can source a US stainless match blank.

Well if there is a US made barrel there already in England.. his course is better with the Border barrel

I can source either a Lilja, Kriger, Shilen or Border barrel. I shoot predominately Kriger in my centre fires but wasn't sure if, with the inhability to reload the Rimfire, it was worth the extra expense?

Thanks again,
Josh

The Shilen 4 groove ratchet rifling seems to be the ticket.

I have two Shilen 4 groove ratchet barrels and the Green Mountain barrel i have right now is out shooting both of the Shilen barrels

I have used Shilen barrels for many years.. A couple years ago I started using Benchmark and they are outperforming any of the Shilens. I would not change the Shilens while they are still shooting ok but when they finally bite the dust, Benchmarks or Kreigers will replace them.
Don't get me wrong.. the Shelin barrels are good.. they really like Center-X.. the Green Mountain likes Pistol Match and the Center-X just as good as one of the other.. but the it seems that the Pistol Match is my quiet wind ammo and the Center-X is my wind ammo.. This is the reason that i say that the GM barrel is doing better.. it is giving me more choices in ammo over the others..

Does this type of shooting involve similar fast shooting/action manipulation as the centerfire game here in the states? Just curious as the 54 Match (not the 1710-12 series) rifles available here are primarily single shots, with the exception of a few like the MSR/1808. Curious about the availability of 54 repeaters.

The vast majority are single shot also, the rifle will be used rarely in competition. It's purpose is to act as a trainer for my centre fire match rifles.

Is this based on matches won, scores shot ?
GM are not match grade barrels, past, present, or likely future ?

The Kreiger rimfire barrels do not relate the centerfire ones and often don't do well in the wind, although this was when they were primarily 8 grooves.
Out of what you've quoted, the Shilen 4 groove ratchets have been the most consistantly performing. I'd go thith that IMHO.
