.284 Win Short Action

Primarily yes. I have done some reading about using r17 in one and making pretty respectable velocity and staying in a short action. I figured I would use something like a Wyatt’s extended internal magazine.

Even while using something like a 140-150 grain bullet? I understand that single feed is the only answer for the big stuff but I was under the impression that will lighter bullets you could run a repeater.

Your probably right about going long action. I started on this path thinking I was only going long action in order to stay versatile. Then I stumbled across the article about the .284 in a short action hunting rifle and it seemed like a perfect fit for my goal. I also have a bunch of 6.5-284 Lapua brass.

Dive in. You'll be happy you did. Not many guys that set one up on a short action. I too wanted a short action after running one with a long action for years. My long action shoots 180-195s superbly. If your looking to shoot anything heavier than 168s, stay with a long action. The short action with 150-168s is ideal. Especially with RL17. I found 3000 fps with great accuracy. Just need to play with seating and load work.

This article basically started my idea. I was stuck on using a .280 AI in a long action but I would much rather have a short action rifle for hunting.

I have two hunting rifles one is 284 long action other is 280AI and I have some others.

When I decide to have 284/280AI build I had gunsmith order two barrel same maker and both have same finish length. I'd plan on using 280AI bull elk tag here in Co and 284 as back up rifle.

I would stick with 280AI on long action and it's step up from 284. If you want short action 284 then build that. I shot 6.5x284 Norma (OAL 3.228") on long action and used it for antelope and that's action I used for the 284.

I found a Winchester Mod 70 short action push feed in 284 that had a box mag turns out there were only 200 made just before the closing of the Winchester factory in New Haven CT. Shoots well with the 140-150 grain bullets never taken it hunting just sits in the safe.
