Evening brainstorm

I dont know if its me reinventing the wheel or not, but I love to problem solve and doodle at night. I was thinking of a portable shooting bench for varmint hunting and target shooting. Apparatus goes directly into vehicle receiver and then you move it anywhere you want. Anyway Im not going into a patent office any time soon so if you guys want to take it further, go for it.

Good idea. My only suggestion would be make sure there's enough clearance to open the tail gate without having to remove the whole thing.

^^^ I would have the chsir far enough out that the tailgate csn lay down and serve as a table behind you. AND a wide enough shooting table top to be able to turn a bit and adjust. You dont need a jack stand at the receiver. two out front would serve well, add it as a last resort at the hitch if need be.. It should be pretty light, compared to towing capacity.

the chair swiveling a bit may be nice...

biggest issue to combat is sitting down in the chair vs the squat of the truck when you sit..

Ive been thinking about building one too... however I thought about a square frame where I wouldnt have a metal pice between my legs, for comfort, and being able to turn and adjust alittle

It would be illegal in some states. Matt

I made similar thing a long time ago for ground hog hunting. I had the table portion flip down to the ground with adjustable locking legs.

Worked pretty decent. I found it best to use the ground for support because of the wind. The truck acted like a sail.

I was think about building one last year. Decided it was going to cost more then I wanted to spend and if you want to move it to another truck the stands might not be long enough or if ground is not level could be a pain with the jacks. So I made one to sit in the bed out of wood that 2 guys can sit at. Also nice to have the height of the truck to see across the field.

Removable boat seat on 3/4” post would make it a drop in and solve a few problems. Maybe a flip up sleeve for crossing terrain would speed up moving around. Good idea overall and a space saver!

Had the same idea during the development of the BR Pivot. Made a couple, worked okay, but as has been noted, once the wind comes up, the truck starts to get buffeted and the entire thing becomes unstable. The setup would be okay for quick range sessions in the morning locally, but it sucks for actual PD or squirrel shooting.

We put two landing legs at the rear of the truck to help steady it in the wind, but it only made a small difference, as rubber tires will flex somewhat with the truck facing the wind, resulting in less than ideal stability. Anything attached to a vehicle will suffer the same problem. The same goes for shade umbrella's, as they act like a sail and transfer any movement directly to the bench if it's attached. Best to have it separate from the bench. We use four-legged sun shades that can be moved as the sun travels it's arc, staying in the shade all day. It's been working very well now for right at 30+ years.

We call this event our Annual Rat Rodeo....you can see why:

Moral to my story: Don't attach any bench to a vehicle, same goes for shade devices....IF you expect to hit anything past 200 yards. ;)

I saw one these on a truck at a restaurant a few years back in SD. I have no experience... Wished I had met the owner.

I met Wally, the owner shooting PD's in SD (Cornett's Prairie Dog Conference) some years ago after our BRP was introduced. His bench is indeed sturdy, but weighs so much it can only be transported by truck, and the cost approaches two grand! The BRP was termed "vehicle served", but weighing 55 lbs. (Lite model), it could still be moved about by any normal human. Not so much with Wally's bench. We called it "the tank" and considered it overly engineered and not really cost effective. YMMV ;)

I agree with Rick in Oregon, the wind buffeting will cause a shake that won't allow you to get a steady sight picture, also if it doesn't rotate, you would have to move the truck to get a new shooting direction.

When we used to shoot off the hood of the truck with a bipod and a rear bag, the wind shake was severe at times.

I do believe somebody already has one marketed. Can't think of the company name but back in the early 2000s was being sold in Varmint Hunter magazine. Think maybe even PS magazine as well. Slid into the hitch receiver and has two drop legs to stabilize the bench from the trucks suspension movement. Legs fold up so it can be transported in the receiver.

If it isn't disconnected from the receiver, it's going to move.

Ya not sure of the mechanics. Just reading the description stating that it can be transported in the receiver. Obviously some of the attachments would be removed. Yes unless the truck has 2 stabilizer legs in the rear on each side, it will move up and down or when wind hits the truck. That's true.

I cant figure out why anyone would want to get out of an air conditioned truck to shoot!!!!
Am i missing out???

HA! Good one! :D

'Course, if you open the window to shoot, you are now A/C'ing the world. Always best to open the window prior to shooting.......

Anybody have any user experience with a "Wally?" wonder how they address this?
My receiver ( class III? I believe has a 2-1/8" ID..It has a lot of free play between the receiver and hitch ball mount.

Even that $12,500.00 trailer would have to be disconnected from the receiver.
