Ideal 300 yard caliber?

I cannot disagree with any of the suggested cartridges but I can sure have fun with low recoil and excellent accuracy out to 400 and 500 yards with a 22BR, 8 twist and the +- 80 grain bullet weights. You have a difficult decision to make for sure. Good luck

The 30-06 is a wonderful cartridge. Hunting, 1,000 yard prone.

It is not, however, anything like an ideal cartridge for shooting paper 100-300 yards.

But, hey, it’s good to know that you’re still out there breathing and kicking. Just wonder why you drifted off your normal 25-06 recommendation.

Nakneker- I haven't killed the idea of the 6.5 Lapua, I actually really like it. I was just hoping the Creedmoor would come out ahead for no other reason than availability. I'd prefer the 6.5 Lapua. I think a great marketing strategy for Remington would be to offer 700 in 6.5 Lapua... Make their stock rifles relevant again.

Mr.big- I've looked at the savage, I wish there was a mag fed option in case I wanted to do something else with the rifle. While it will likely be a bench mostly rifle I'd like the option to take it to a prs style match. It's also a little heavy if I decided to hunt with it.

Kris- I've thought a lot about the 224 but with the lack of ar barrels and independent data I leaned away from it and to the Grendel/turbo 40. I will likely pick up a barrel though to give it a try when/if they get popular and are offered by BA, Faxon, or some other high value company.

Well I have to admit I am a little suprised more people didn't suggest the dasher. I don't know why but I was expecting a lot more for that one.

It seems fairly unanimous about the 6br, that's good I suppose. I just hope the brass issue is resolved.

Is there a specific bullet weight that does best at 300 and is not overkill made for a 1000 yards?

My savage 10 center feed runs great from the mag with the sss ejector/extractor upgrade. I have shot a ton of sub .3 moa groups from 100-300 yds with berger 105 vld

Last year was my first year really getting into shooting and participating in matches and I shot a 6br shooting 108 Berger and 105amax and a 223 throated for 90vld and was happy shooting both.

The 6mmAI is a wonderful cartridge for long range shooting. Fire forming brass is not complicated and I've found with mine that accuracy is also excellent when fire forming, you can use the preformed cartridges just as effectively when developing a load.

The 6mmAI with the right bullets will shoot effectively out to 600-800 yards and is an excellent ground hog gun for these ranges, three hundred yard shots are nothing more than a chip shot for this cartridge.

Does no one look at what the OP asked for?

100 to 300 yard paper.

OP: Build a 6 BR bolt gun. It’s stupid easy. Easy on barrels. Easy on your shoulder. Easy on the pocketbook. Don’t buy factory. Build one or buy one used on here.

If you want to do something else, you’ll have an excuse to build another rifle.

I think this route is the one I'll take. Rebarrel 700 or savage 10.

So focusing on 300 yards would I be better off going 1-10 twist and 90-95gn bullets?

Even though I am a 6.5 Creedmoor fanboy (and shooter), I think the 6BR is the way to go here. If you think brass availability may be an issue or concern, check for 6BR brass/ammo, order a supply and then buy/build the rifle.

Edit: going with 223 Rem bolt rifle would give you the option to shoot F-Class (FTR) if you wanted to compete as well as plink.

95 grain berger vld require 8 twist. You can shoot a 68 from an 8 twist but you cant shoot a 105 from a 14 twist. 8 twist gives you some versatility for future endeavors
