30-06 and Sierra 175's: powder

Gents,

If this should be in the reloading forum, please forgive me.

I'm going to load my model 700 30-06 with Sierra 175's and would like recommendations from this august group on powders, please. Superformance seems too good to be true, but sometimes things like this actually are true. Anyone using Varget? How about IMR 4895 or H4955?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

God bless America

4350 is what I'll be testing in my new barrel soon.
I've heard good things about the H4350 but powder valley doesn't have any; not right now, anyway. There's also a few guys using IMR 4350 as well. Seems like on the 30-06 guys are either using very light bullets or very heavy bullets and that's influencing their powder selection. FWIW my barrel is a 26" Rock Creek 10 twist sendero contour presently at the smith.

Wish we still had German Salazar's writings in print. I'd bet he knows a thing or two about hand loading for the 30-06! Also, I wish we had a cartridge guide for 30-06 on this website like we do for so many calibers. I'm done whining for now.

IMR 4320 was one of the powders that Mr. Salazar mentioned in his posts for the 30-06. - This was before RE16 was out, which I'm hearing is producing some good loads with the 06 and the A.I. version as well.

PM sent.

My barrel is a 26" CBI mil profile on a 1917, I'm also considering H4831 with the 175smk as I have about 6# of it still.

The neighborhood of 56 grains of H4350 behind a 175 SMK works great in my Springfield.

Also, around 48 grains Imr 4064 shoots well too.

In the absence of H4350, you could try that IMR 4451, too.

Back when the 30-06 was "the" NRA match cartridge, IMR4064 was used to shoot 168 to 180 grain bullets most accurate. One of the arsenals learned that with their M72 match ammo; shot the 173's more accurate than IMR4895, but only with weighed charges.

While IMR4350 made them shoot faster and win the race to the target, they landed closer together with IMR4064. But highest muzzle velocity is typically more important than most accurate as the main objective.

A modern stick powder with the same speed may well do as well.

Go with a load based on your rate of twist.

That factory barrel has a 1:10 twist and is best for 200 grain bullets from 30-06 ammo.

Too bad not more than a few were offered with a 1:12 twist that's best for 150 to 180 grain medium weight bullets.

I shot 56g of IMR 4350 previously, then brother found this load

R#22
60-63g
CCI 250
for 169g Sierra MK, unreal accurate! You will have to interpolate for 175g. I use the same load with the 169g Long range accubond, a bullet worth building a rifle around, in terms of accuracy, and the way it hammers what it hits into the dirt!
Brother reports 2900 with this load from lab radar, bug hole accurate.

Around 2012 I was shooting alot of US military and obviously 308 and 30-06 occupied a lot of my shooting. For the military rifles using 308 and 30-06 I used IMR4895 and 2520 to great satisfaction. When I went to more modern bolt action 30-06 rifles I had the Sierra V edition loading manual that gave N550 as the accuracy powder for the 175’s and they weren’t kidding . I’ve often been getting 5 shot groups under a half in. at 200yds.
