Equipment Question

I own a 16" 5.56 upper with a rail on the receiver and no iron sights, front or rear. I plan to mount a 1-4.5 power optic on the rail.

The upper also has no front sling swivel which I intend to remedy by mounting on the front of the standard round handguard.

Is this configuration legal for service rifle competition ?

Is that handguard a freefloat tube? Of it isn't, youre going to have a hard time getting any accuracy out of it once you apply sling tension.

How were you planning on attaching the sling swivel?

It's probably legal.
If it's not probably nobody will notice or care.
Go shoot it, at worst they dump you into Match Rifle officially
It definitely won't be a competitive(to win) service rifle

If it's not free float and it comes in under 8.5 pounds with scope it might fit nicely in CMP Modern Military

It isnt a float tube. Just plain old round handguards like my CAR 15 had in the Marine Corps in the early 80's.

I plan to attach the sling swivel to the bottom of the handguard up front.

as long as you can get the sling swivel 8 inches plus or minus a 1/2 inch, you should be legal per CMP service rifle rules.

I've been told the NRA conforms to the CMP Service Rifle guidelines.

CMP Service Rifle Rule 4.1.1(b)

"An extended bolt release is permitted
on both right and left-handed receivers, provided there are no permanent
alterations to upper or lower receivers"

I don't see any references to an extended bolt release in the NRA Service Rifle rules.

Can anyone clarify if they're permissible ?

Thanks
