220 Swift AI and 75gr A Max

I'm curious if there's any experience with the 75 gr A Max in the 220 Swift or 22-250? I'm going to TX in a few weeks and thought I'd see how my little 220 Swift AI does on some predators. May have a chance to shoot some hogs and have never shot hogs with less than a 6mm. Curious to hear some experiences. Thanks for the input. Rick

No sir, just not as smart as you. My question was really about 75 gr. A Max not the varmint bullets. thanks for the correction.

I was shooting the 75 Amax out of my 220 swift with H-4831 and the muzzle velocity is 3477fps. The bullet was too hard on fur it really tore Coyotes up and causes massive damage so I switched. It shoots well and hits steel hard even at 700 yards but is a soft bullet so if you are going to shoot hogs I would avoid bone.

Based on my conversations with Hornady, the Amax and Vmax have the same jacket thickness and are constructed essentially the same with the difference being that the Amax bullets are generally a slicker profile.

The 80 grain Berger VLD might be worth a look if you're on the fence with the Amax. Seems a touch tougher than the Amax to me. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use the Amax on yotes.

I haven't found the Amax to be as explosive as some users, but most of the coyotes I've shot with it were hit by a 22-250AI pushing them 3275.

My favorite Criterion barrel so far is my 22-250 barrel. It loves 75gr Amaxes at about 3240fps. Not a hot load, but that’s where the accuracy is, grouping .3 - .4 at 100 and 2.5” at 710 yards. Killed a cull buck with this combo at 410 yards. DRT. Shot a coyote at about 200 a few evenings ago. DRT. The beauty of the 22-250 is watching everything fall through the scope and nothing I have ever shot has been easier to get hits with even a pretty good ways out there. Seems the 75gr Amax has its limits though...

Shot a decent sized boar the evening before last at 359 yards. Wind had layed down and I was very confident with the shot, prone from the Atlas bipod. Point of aim was midway up the line from the crook of the shoulder to the ear. Such placement usually puts the bullet through shoulders and spine too. At the break, I watched the boar go down in the scope. Spinning in a circle and squealing to high heaven. This is where I made my mistake. Being certain he was done, I got up from behind the rifle and watched through the Binos. To my amazement, the boar recovered, got up and hit the brush before I could get back down behind the gun. No blood trail... My guess is the Amax made it through the onside shoulder and tickled but did not penetrate the spine. Thinking of trying some 62gr TTSXs, but they sure don’t have the BC that the Amax does.
