At what RPM are you threading barrels ?

Thats part of why I recommended what I did. If your threading barrels a few days a week, you can easily thread at high speed. If you wont touch the lathe for a few weeks at a time your not going to be as familiar and would be better off with HSS and going slower imo. Shiny pretty threads are a pride thing more than an accuracy thing.

I set my cross feed to zero with the handle at 12 o'clock. I hook it with my thumb. At the end of the cut a snap of the wrist backs it out a half a turn and I'm disengaging the feed at the same time. All that can be done in a few tenths of a second.

I run about 100-150 rpm. This is attained with VFD at 20 Hz or so using the lowest non back-gear setting on a South Bend 13. I use Iscar full profile TiN coated inserts and Viper's Venom cutting oil. I don't have any issues with carbide at any speed or DoC.

Wow ! That’s a lot of speed for manual disengagement. I’m guessing you spend a lot of time doing barrels.

At first, not as much anymore. Maybe 6-8 a year really. I just spent a lot of time with some delrin and a metronome.

I like to use the thickest stinkiest dark cutting oil available. Full sulphur rigid dark. Looks and tastes like molasses and match sticks

You're crazy jay! I wouldn't try that going up to a shoulder. Well, maybe with 32 tpi.
