OK. What is a "reverse to lead screw"?
It allows you to change the direction of the lead screw without stopping the spindle. It's a great feature to have! It makes threading effortless.
Threading in the conventional manner is pretty much "effortless', now.
Yeah. I thought it was a pretty nice feature though. When I use a lathe without it now, I miss it. I Was wondering if there was anybody else on here that felt the the same way.

My 12x30 Hendey lathe is set up with an auto reverse mechanism to allow you to leave the split nuts engaged while threading. Some were equipped with an optional cam device to pull the cross slide away from the work piece while reversing. Lacking the optional withdraw mechanism I thread with the compound set at 29 degrees and have the cross feed inward travel set with a stop. when I reach the end of the thread I back the crossfeed off as the leadscrew reverses, feed in the compound the desired depth of cut for the next pass as the carriage is reversing and return the crossfeed to the travel stop before the lead screw returns to forward travel. It is easier to do than to describe and, with practice, you can get very close to a shoulder. Because of this feature most Hendeys were shipped without threading dials one could be had as an option. Reading period Hendey literature it is apparent Hendey was quite proud of the feature.
I generally thread between 75 to 125 rpm since there is a lot of momentum in the gear train on this lathe and a previous owner broke a shaft in the reversing mechanism at higher rpm. A less than stellar repair was done to the shaft and it works. Fortunately, I have a complete reversing shaft and gears on the shelf from an identical lathe that was damaged to the point that the company that owned it parted it out (installation is on the round-to-it list) .

I can thread at the 400 rpm range too by keeping the halfnuts engaged and just reversing the leadscrew feed to traverse back. It's also equipped with s set of stops which I adjust for the end of the thread so it stops traversing by disengaging the drive for the leadscrew. It works like a charm no worries about running into the shoulder.
