Would there be any gain to morphing a 243 AI and a 6SLR

Utilize the long neck of the 6slr but then mate it to a 243 AI body. Keep or exceed the powder capacity of the 243 and gain the benefits of the 6slr neck and barrel life? Plus one could utilize the plentiful and less expensive 243 AI die(with a little stock removal at the bottom)
Or did I just re-invent the 6mmREM?

I know there are people who love their AI's, and there are a couple on my list of things to build some day (like a 30-40 Krag) but 308 based cases just don't gain you much at all. The case already has very little taper, what you gain in blowing the shoulder forward is very small capacity wise. You see people claim that they get 100 to 150 FPS more than a regular case, but that's all you really get going from a 308 to a 30-06, with a heck of a lot more capacity than you gain blowing out a 308 case. So, if people really are getting that they are probably getting there with way to much pressure.

I have a 6SLR, I run 105s/107s that will fit in an AICS mag in the vicinity of 3100FPS. A straight 243 can run them in the area of 3200. The beauty of the 6SLR is it's simplicity, just size and shoot, no more work than running new brass over a mandrel before you load. So, to me, no. I wouldn't bother with it.

Awesome case imo, if i didnt already have everything setup for a SLR I would have had my last rifle setup for the "SLR Imp" but not because of extra capacity or speed just because of the 40deg shoulder. I got couted 105 HVLDs to 3300fps with my 28" slr (running them at 3150fps now) so I doubt youl really gain allot with the imp case in the speed dept but the 1 or 2 I know of here are crazy accurate and we know some very accurate cases with that 40deg shoulder. We have another one over here thats basically a shortend 6Rem case with that SLR imp neck and shoulder on that really screams with a full case of powder, i might be wrong but i think the 6Rem has a longer case and more case capacity than the 243/slrImp?

If you like to play with something different id give that "slr imp" a go. It looks very sexi and they shoot, youl never trim brass, its a "strong" case with the little body taper anf you have a very long neck to use.

XTR would you mind sharing which powder has worked best for your SLR. I scoped the barrel on my 6XC today and it is toast. So ordered the reamer and die for the 6SLR. I have enjoyed the 6XC but barrel life has not been great. I hope to use H1000 or RL26 in the slr?? NOT HIJAC the thread!!

I could not get enough H1000 in the case to get over 3000FPS.

I got an accurate load (don't remember the numbers) with N160. I have been loading with 7828SSC with both the 105H hunting and the 107SMK. I run both 3050 to 3100 range. I could get more but that's where they were shooting well. I have heard great things about RL26 with regard to accuracy and velocity, but I've not tried it.

I have a cartridge similar to the 6SLR (243 Mendoza) and could not get enough H1000 to get decent velocities so I am using H4831SC with great results.

XTR, Steve: What barrel length on your rifle. I had good luck with RL26 and H1000 in a straight 243win. I ran some 243 Winchester brass through the Whidden FL bushing die to form the SLR but have not checked the case capacity yet.

To the OP the Smith I use is forming brass for his 6mmAI using factory ammo. His velocity exceeds 6XC easily if that is of interest.

If I recall correctly, a 6SLR loses about 3gr of water capacity compared to a straight 243.

My rifle has a 24" barrel.

I have a 30" barrel and wanted to get over 3000fps with 115 DTAC

That should be very doable.

I run a 30" barreled 6SLR and run the 105/107 gr bullets 3,150/3,175 fps with ease. There's another node just a bit higher with Velocities around 3,250 fps but it's hard to get that much H-1000 or N-165 in the case, a whole lotta crunching going on.

My 243 held 54.3gr in lapua and my first SLR 53.5gr in lapua, new brass in my new slr holds 54gr exactly in lapua. There is plenty of speed to be had with 105 and even 115gr bullets, 3000fps should be easy with a 30" tube.

My SLR holds 54.5 gr. of H2O in Lapua brass.
QL says the 243 holds 54.0

WOW. OK, I'd never compared the water volume. I just weighed some cases.

My fired WW SLR was 167.8gr, my new WW 234 was 166.3gr volumes were
identical 53.7gr of water.

The SLR is a fired case and the 243 is brand new out of the bag.

Now I'm positive that this is what the 243 should have been from day one. Unless someone wants to run factory ammo I can't see any reason to ever have a 243W instead of an SLR.

6SLR, 28" tube, Fed 215M primers, 46.8 gr H1000, 3088 MV. Bullets are hBN coated 105 AMax.

I sure like H1000 in the SLR - for one thing you don't have to worry about exceeding pressure. ;)

Glad u guys are givin up some info...I have a 6 SLR reamer in hand and just got my size die from Whidden, gotta get a barrel on the way...My reamer is at 100 freebore....

Its a fantastic caliber and I cant see myself without one. The load Im running now for steel matches took me 9 shots over a crony to find, took it out to 300y and first 5 shots went into les than 0.4". From there out to a 1100y its yet to mis any piece of steel I have pointed it at. Next year im planning a 300wsm for LR F open and the SLR will be my short/mid range rifle.

If I could bring myself to shoot F Open at all, much less at mid range I'd build one for that purpose too. I may have to build one as a light hunting rife.

I run a different improved version of the .243 win. Easy to fire form and have been getting 3100+ fps with 105-107gr bullets. I know it sound like them all but this one is out of a 22" barrel.
