Deer season, 6BR, it works...

shot this buck last weekend, using my wifes 6BR. 105 bergers, 8 twist rem var contour. I put this sightron on it with 1/8 clicks, sighted it in the day before... bug holes...

Early morning, just got light, had a few deer eatin corn... a doe and fawn came out, the doe was acting very jumpy, I knew she was being chased... shed run off then come back to eat.. finally she was eating and this boy stuck his head out into the road by my blind. He went to eating corn some and I dropped him with the 6BR.

Very nice Buck. Thanks for sharing. The 6 BR is truly a great cartridge. I've been using one for years and never had a problem. Had a friend that killed a doe at 400 yards Monday afternoon with a 6 BR> I told him the 6 BR was not designed to kill Deer at 400 Yards. He said "worked for him" !

honestly I dont think the 6BR is given enough credit for a hunting round. its always about improving it for BR shooting.

Kills as well as a 243 ;) One deer I killed was at 400 LRF, 105 Amax, 2850mv double lunged, barely made it 20 yds. Another same load, headshot at 50. Killed others with using 95 NBTs, and even one with a 70 TNT to 200 yds. 6BR is GTG to 400 I can tell you that from experience. Place your shot, use a good bullet. Soft bullet, go for lungs or neck, until longer distances. Harder bullets, go for shoulders at longer ranges to promote expansion.

Did you use Berger’s VLD Hunting bullet And did the bullet pass through ?

yes berger vld hunting. honestly I dont remember if it went through. I shot him in the neck. dropped him dead. less bloodied meat that way. shoulder shots nasty up the meat too much. i assume it did, never found the bullet or fragments

Nice buck.

Shoulder shots often have deer come back from the dead. For the third time in my hunting life I had that happen again last week. Chose to put a 130 Sierra HP Gameking on the shoulder of a 10 pt. Wack and down. No movement for 5 minutes. Killed a doe after that. Picked up the doe first and went for the buck. Gone. Four hours and two helpers, even with a distant picture of where he went down. Gone.

That is the third time it has happened. Once with a 100 gr. Nosler out of a 257 Roberts. Then a Sierra 130 out of a 270. Now similar bullet out of a 6.5 Ackley. All "wack". All down and no movement for a while. All up and gone. Think it "explodes" on the knuckle of the shoulder, sheds the core from the jacket and does no penetration.

Behind the shoulder and into the next is more reliable if you can get a good shot.

Captain, Nothing worse than taking a deer to bed. Do the double lunger, break that balloon. They can't run far if they can't breathe. Shoulder shots can be, as you found out, a lost deer. I used to do that and lost them too. Now I go four inches aft and four inches up from the back of the leg and belly junction. When steam comes out of those two holes, it's a guaranteed kill. Never lost one yet. Same goes for archery.
Good Luck hunting.

I chose this cartridge for this year. Thanks to North Carolina's RC mismanagement of my area for the last 12 years. I'll be lucky to harvest a mature animal. I let the dinks pass and hear 15 shots 30 minutes later. Heard 50 plus shots on Thanksgiving morning before I gave it up. I used to see deer every time I went out, now , due to over harvest I'm lucky to see anything. Great buck and good shot!

I also used my 6BR on deer this year. Berger 105s VLD Hunting in the orange box with 30.2 gr varget. Shot 3 deer all were hit behind the shoulder and recovered within a short distance. At ranges of 140 yrds and 2 at 220 yrds. What i noticed was there were no exit holes. I expected a pass thru at such short distances. It worked fine for short range.
