Most accurate hunting rifle out of the box

Did a head shot once in my "young and dumb" younger years......and after witnessing the result changed my focus on taking an animal ethically vs. bragging rights at camp as THE club sharpshooter. I was the only one at camp who reloaded and shot target weekly since I could drive. I eventually got into competitive short range BR and to this day, I wouldn't attempt a headshot on an animal EVEN if I was sitting at our concrete shooting bench with my BR rifle and rest with windflags out. Why? ........Because that deer head is a moving target. I went from tagging out every year in my early years to long dry spells because I did not like the shot(s) offered. Just my concept of what's ethical that allows me to sleep well every night.

I find these comments amazing. Please tell us about the deer in your area. There has to be a reason they are so scared.

...."For most it is an irresponsible shot"...I agree 100%. Actually,I believe it is irresponsible for anyway . I hope all this talk about those long neck/head shots is just BS chest pounding and that people are not wounding all these animals like their lives don't matter anymore than a paper or steel target. I surely hope our young shooters find ethical hunters to learn from, not the narcissistic sniper wannabe. I once shot a deer from 220 yards,it died a horrible death...not all shots hit where you want them to. A pulled shot on paper hurts nothing,an animal is a whole different story.

Please let us know about this 220yd shot. How do you hunt? What is the area like? For the record I am not a sniper wannabe. I have paid dearly for my skills. If a person is not willing to work for real skills and most do not why even hunt? You know the guys who just shoot at 100yds off a bench with a few boxes a year.

I have no problem taking a body shot. I don't eat most of what I shoot any way. My dog eats most of the game critters I kill (not eat).

Head shot- 4" target
Vital shot- 14"+ target
Nothing to do with skills, choosing the target with less margin of error shows lack of respect for the animal in my opinion. But people are free to do as they choose, like I am free to give them my unwanted opinions :) Carry on.

Yup your opinion.

????? Typical free roaming herd with limited human contact....... it's in their nature....what it takes for them to survive.

Recently, I had an experience that was hard for me to believe. A friend wanted me to help him sight in two rem 700's in std 308. One was the sps blued varmint weight, plastic stock, X mark trigger. The other was a SPS sporter, blued, with plastic stock. He had a case of factory ammo, 178g Hornady TAP ammo.

Bone stock guns with no tinkering what so ever.

Scope on the varmint was a Trijicon 3-12x, and the sporter had a straight 4x Trijicon on it, leupold bases and rings.

The varmint shot the factory ammo with the bullets touching, and the sporter shot 3/4".

I was shooting off a Hart benchrest and bunny rear bag with target at 100 yards.

I went and bought a lottery ticket.

220 Yard shot was across an open field using the same rest I always did,a blown down tree . Tried to get fancy with a head/neck shot when a body shot was what I should have waited for .I have made those shots numerous times in the past but this one I pulled and hit high and to the rear(spine) .Did not find the deer until the next morning, the coyotes tipped me off .That deer had a big circle worn into the ground where it had fought off the coyotes all night while dragging itself around with a paralyzed rear . That one hit me hard, way too many variables to say you can do it EVERY time...and still be honest with yourself and true to sport of taking deer humanely .

That might be the difference in the deer. Out here it is common to be working out side and deer just grazing or just bedded down. Last year I was in my garden and a few just walked past and bedded down in my trees maybe 50 to 70yds away.

I bet the trees and the close nature of PA makes them skittish. You just never know something that may kill you my just be around the next tree. Out here if it is behind the next tree don't walk the mile to it.

So a one off screw up on your part changed how you hunt? Good. I have stated many times in long range hunting nothing happens fast. If it is don't take the shot.

After I shoot, I rack the bolt and stay on target until I am sure it is dead. This is usually about 10 to 20 minutes. I then take a compass bearing and get two points one forward and one behind me so I can walk a straight line. I already know the range so I walk out. Most of the time it is right there. If it is not just look around. They are easy to see in the short vegetation.

You are right about not being able to guarantee what happens to every bullet fired. I did fire a shot at a deer and hit a pheasant. A game warden saw this and also seen the deer run off. I was able to see the bullet hit the ground near but not hitting the deer. He did harass me for quite some time as if I could take a 338LM and hit a flying pheasant several hundred yards away. Other than that you should be able to besides a bullet failure. Those are very rare.

I had a client who told me that he preferred to shoot running game in Africa. Nothing was immune to his 270 Weatherby, "because it did not miss". The world needs these people of great skill so that they can tell the rest of us about it. To be clear, I do not think that anyone should take a head shot on most big game. Perhaps an elephant?

Elephants? Most assuredly, only don't miss the vital spot lest one become a pizza.

I don't think that Gates quote is applicable in this case since we, apparently, are not dealing with a "smart people."

Very classy.

edit.

How about asking how I got to where I am instead of just insulting me?

End edit.

How about Remington 700 I want to buy it, is it good rifle?
I bought one recently, the bore looked like it was carved with a chisel .I sent it into Remington and they replaced the barrel...with one just a little smoother . Same issue but not quite as severe . This was not the rough chamber issue you read about,it was the actual bore having rings ground into the lands near the muzzle . I have owned 700s since the 70s and this was my first issue .I will also add that Remington's customer service is a nightmare .Their reply to my questioning what was taking so long to put a new barrel on was...we can send it back just the way you sent it in(Damaged) . Like I stated ,just my experience.

This target was a week later, at 100 on the Bridgeville, De. Range, in 15-20 mph winds. Good vertical but the wind got me. We moved to shooting 2X2 in. Tiles at 300. I think I hit 70% first shot after getting dialed in. The wind had died.

This is a month ago, testing some mag length LC brass loads for "mass produced plinking loads". No brass sorting. Just resized machine gun brass. Blemished Hornady 168s.

Hey those are my targets!!! I designed those in AutoCAD about twenty years ago...
