I like this part:

"In March 2014, the company TrackingPoint revealed their smart scope was being integrated onto the M2010 sniper rifle. The Army purchased six systems in January 2014 for testing, and the networked scope and guided trigger had been added. The TrackingPoint system includes a computerized scope that marks a selected target, gathers and compensates for external factors, and uses a special trigger that does not pull until the system is sure the bullet will land where intended. TrackingPoint costs between $22,000 and $27,000 to be installed on a bolt-action rifle to achieve hits out to 1,250 yd (1,143 m), though it is not intended to replace sniping skills but be used by soldiers who need to take shots at longer sniping ranges."

Look up info on the mrk 248 mod 0 & the mrk 248 mod 1. Military designation for the 300 win mag. Lots of good reading. I personally have a long rifles inc. built 248 mod 1 and it is awesome. The mod 0 chamber is designed for 190 sierra match king and the mod 1 chamber is designed for the 220 match king Lots of great info on the internet.

What I question is the claim that the 300 Win Mag extends the useful range 50% over the 7.62x51 M24 (from 800 to 1200 meters). Really?

The difference between the MOD O and MOD 1 is the ammo/bullet only.

There is no difference in chamber specs.

"Within a few years, the M852’s legality finally was recognized across the Armed Forces. The more this bullet was fired, however, the more its shortcomings became apparent. Originally designed for 300-meter Olympic competition, the 168-gr. Sierra MatchKing projectile goes subsonic at around 800 meters, degrading its accuracy-a major issue, given the likelihood of future long-range sniping in the Middle East’s deserts."

"Both U.S. Army Special Forces and Navy Special Warfare units already had a decade’s experience with a 190-gr., .300 Win. Mag. round, developed by the Navy Surface Warfare Center. Designated the Mk 248 Mod 0, the load increased useful range to 1,200 yds.; however, the U.S. Army’s new requirement called for a round effective to 1,500 yds. to replace the M118LR. The Army planned to mate the cartridge with a new sniper rifle, then in development."

Attribution both quotes:

These are similar to other quotes featured in several other articles. I don't advocate for their math or agree with their findings. We all know the politics and budget fights which usually guide the resolutions. I'm just passing these along.

And boy, do the troops hate that scope - at least in my experience.

Since you broke the ice, a friend in Austin wrote me this about the company and scope:

I used to work for John McHale at Netspeed. I know several people who worked at TrackingPoint. They had problems. Brought in some military guys to run the company and they screwed it up. All my friends quit. Not sure how well they are doing now but the website seems to indicate they are still in business. The early problems were the electronics were not hardened against the vibration of the weapon and they failed. You can't put normal electronics under that kind of stress and expect them to hold up. It was a small Linux computer...

Navy uses the Mk 13 which is what was seen in the movie(along with a McBros TAC338). I believe theyre on the Mod 7 config at this point - AICS AX chassis, Stiller Mk 13 action(basically a TAC-300 renamed), Lilja 27"(?) barrel, Xtreme trigger, pretty sure a S&B PMII, andd AFAIK theres a AAC as well as a Surefire can thats used..
as said above, M118LR wont hold a candle to the Mk 248 theyre running in the Win Mags...
Army SF(and other SOCOM units) has the Remington MSR, I dont know much about this rifle but Im sure its badass, even if the AI PSR probably shouldve won the contract..
Big Army runs the M2010, basically just a R700 .300 WM in RACS chassis.

..correct me if Im wrong..

... yeah, and the barrel will say good bye after few hundred rounds. :-)
The 338 Lapua with 300gr. bullets would be a better choice, but I understand that they choose 300WM because of the existing actions.

I shoot competition on a range where the SEALs train their snipers. We pick up piles of their 300WM brass there.

Shooting out to 2000yds there, even 300WMs with loads far inferior to military ammunition make it accurately to 1700-1800 yards. Each and every one was still making nice hits at 1500yds.

Of course, the 338s on the line (Lapua, Edge) went further and hit harder.

300 Winmag and 308 are obviously two entirely different classes of cartridge. But if you want to objectively compare them you still have to do an apples to apples comparison. The only two things you can objectively compare in the performance envelope of both cartridges is 1) Danger space and 2) Wind drift. These are the two biggest concerns when thinking about hit probability.

One of the assertions I saw in a post up above is that the 300 winmag (A191 loaded with a 190g SMK @2900fps) is supposed to extend the performance envelope over the 308 (M118LR loaded with a 175g SMK @ 2600fps) by 50%. So the example given was 800yds for the 308 vs 1200 yds for the 300 winmag ( post #7)

Well, doing the math for M118LR, we find that at 800 yds this round has a danger space of approximately 30 yds on a 18"x20" target. So as long as the range estimation is within +/- 15 yds of actual, you will still get a hit.The amount of wind it takes to push the round off the target is 2mph at that range, so wind estimation must be within 2mph.

Doing the same math for the 300 winmag it is discovered that those same figures, 30yd danger space and 2mph cushion in wind estimation occur at 930 yards.

So shooting A191 at 930 yds is the same as shooting M118LR at 800 yds. That is about a 16% improvement in range over the 308 using the same performance criteria. The 300winmag will stay supersonic to 1200 yds no doubt, I guess it depends on how you define the improvement you are looking for.
