nchester magnum in the millitary

I believe the last round of testing the Army wanted to go to the 338LM but the cost to change all the platforms over was prohibitive. They tested a new 300WM loading with the 220SMK and managed to get performance into the range they were looking for, at least enough to kick the can down the road for another 10 yrs or so until they re-assess another platform.

Now i some cases what gets used in theater may be a YMMV type thing.

Wasn't talked about in the movie or otherwise but I've read a comment somewhere from Chris Kyle that at some point the teams got the 338LM. The point of the comment he made was that he blamed it for a lot of his hearing loss. His comment was that he didn't use hearing protection in the field and at the time they didn't have cans for the 338, indicating to me that there was at least some use of the 338LM.

You are right everyone who was shooting did want the 338lm. The bean counters stopped that project before it started. With all the cash we were flushing down the toilet in Iraq and Afghanistan we could have just bought AI rifles with scopes and a ton of ammo. Flash forward to today the 240gr bullets from a 300WM give a person very good performance. I do not remember how close it is to the 300gr but it is close. I shoot a 220gr SMK from my 300WM and it is good, but it is not a 300gr from a 338lm. If my 338 was left handed I would sell my 300WM.

Yes Chris Kyle did like shooting the 338 and they were not issued mufflers for them. Which is crazy because the barrel was threaded for a brake.

My personal experience with both on game and nongame critters is there is no comparison between the two. The 338LM is the "kill-in-ist" round I have ever used.

i have heard that the 300 Winchester is used as a sniper rifle.if so what would they shoot in it and how far is it used?
I saw it used in the movieamerican sniper by chris.

That's what I hear. Given the ballistics, an excellent choice, although SOCOM will not toss the .50s in the trash - they can solve certain problems with unique finality. Procurement and logistics may take a while before it is fully in service . . . Murphy had the Pentagon in mind when pen met paper and the Law was promulgated.

From what I read, Chris Kyle didn't favor the 338LM because indoors the suppressors on the 338LM's did not muffle the blast enough and he always got a headache after using them.

The 300WM didn't burn as much powder nor shot as big a bullet, therefore the cans worked good indoors.

So they (socom) is replacing all the 338LM and 300 WM rifles with the 300 norma? That actually makes sense.
Im not involved in any of the military stuff but i may need a 300 norma and mabie i will be able to get some GI brass for it. Thanks[/QUOTE]

SEALs(Kyle, etc) used McBros TAC-338 and theres also mention of a PGM Hecate(French sniper rifle) if youre wondering what .338 LM rifle was/is used. Also heard some AI's may be/were in use unofficially..
