Loose Primers with Hornady Cases

When I reload for my 300 wm I have no problem with tight primers with Federal cases, but not so with Hornady. These are once fired Hornady 195 grain Match Ammo cases. Using Winchester magnum primers and using a Forrester press to seat them. About one out of 20 will fall out in the ammo storage box or when putting them in the mag.

Obvious answer is to just use Federal but the gun likes the reloads with Hornady brass.

Many once-fired cases aren't unless you bought them new. I never buy them any more. I've had quite a few that were overpressured, some allowing the primers to fall out. It's best to buy new cases and that way you know their history. I don't think it's a problem with Hornady. I use Hornady Match cases for my hot .308 loads and that handle the pressure better than Lapua.

These are once fired as I fired them however. I bought the new ammo from Hornady, fired it and then reloaded the once fired cases.

I wondered about high pressure and actually last year sent a box of ammo from the case I had bought back to Hornady with that very question. Never got numbers from them but they sent a new box of ammo to replace the one I sent and a letter telling me everything was in spec FWIW

AGREED! Consider the caliber also which is why the velocity is up, but so is the pressure. Might consider trying LC Match which I suspect holds the best pressure of all of them.

Hornady brass just isnt that good IMO. Its known to be soft

It has been my experience that Hornady Brass that I have tried (6.5x284) has been softer than Lapua and Norma,and I have quit using it.

Ammo makers have to compete with each other. When one of them wants to get more sales they make their ammo shoot a little faster. Then when buyers see a faster load they think better and all makers have to compete. I was working with a friend on a Nemo (a ar15 in 300 win mag) it showed pressure with a lot of standard 300 win mag ammo. I read the book and found that most ammo made for bolt action hunting rifles is too hot for Nemo and possibly the Browning. I got the impression that Nemo's people thought ammo companies had to make ammo hot to get it to sell.
