2 New NBRSA 600yd Competitors

Just wrapped up the NBRSA NW Regional 600yd Championship in White City OR and wanted to brag on a couple new NBRSA shooters from my neck of the woods. The match director will likely post the results once the 1000yd match is completed. @knguyen and @newbieshooter shot their first registered match over the past two days and both did extremely well. They both dedicate a lot of time in practice, load development, research, etc and it paid off. Newbieshooter is shooting a rifle Alex Wheeler built (pic bellow) and it along with the shooter have 4 pending 600 yd world records (group) from the match. The 6BRAI with Vapor Trail bullets helped Newbieshooter get the job done.

Congrats Jeff

Big time accomplishment! Some guys go a lifetime without those results.

You might want to rethink your name on here

congrats to you "newbie",,,,I would say you have lots of previous trigger time and it "shows".....you have earned it,,,,Roger

That truly is an awesome accomplishment. Let's see: Wheeler Accuracy rifle, 6bra case, Vapor Trail bullets and my guess at H4895. Starting out with some of the best gear out there. Add dedication to tuning loads and look at the results. Talk about getting hooked on the first cast. Great shooting.

Hard work in practice, load development, and research does not guarantee you will win; however, the lack of it guarantees you will not. Congrats to you both, I'm sure all your efforts will continue to pay off!

Richard....

Wow considering the 12 knot wind, the diving rain, in the second rely, on the 2nd day, you yourself did some superb shooting. winning first place. Where do i sign up for your class ??

See you tomorrow.

All of our good results would not have happened if it were not for our Great Mentor and Friend. Without his guidance, patience, and the ability to teach us on how to improve ( myself would floundering and drowning in this long range shooting discipline).
We learn each time we shoot with him.
Your patience is unbelievable , especially with my dumb questions and faltering brain.
thank you
Rich

Thanks everyone for your kind and supportive words.

Thanks to all the shooters and volunteers at the Rogue Valley Shooting Sports Association (RVSSA) for being so welcoming and hosting a great event.

Special thanks to @knguyen who first encouraged me to come out and watch him shoot at the local short range club matches (not that he needed one - but I became his spotter) - and to @Jet who saw me there and told me I couldn't learn by watching - so he graciously brought a rifle/ammo (PPC) for me to shoot at the next match just a little over 2 years ago. Both of them have selflessly mentored me and accelerated my learning in all aspects of shooting. I appreciate all the time they've spent on the phone fielding questions or the hours spent in the garage teaching me how to use the reloading equipment....etc. There is still so much to learn from my mentors - and from all of you. Also, thanks to @Alex Wheeler for taking time answering all my newbie questions regarding a build. Alex is great to work with and I highly recommend him.

A few questions regarding the load. Given that each rifle is different - your mileage may vary. But I thought I'd post it here for reference (see also the existing 6BRAI node thread):

Powder: 30.40gr H4895
Primer: CCI450
Bullet: 103 Vapor Trail
Bullet Seating: Jammed .018
Average Speed: 2970

A side note about load development. I only have local access to a 300 yard range. I tested various seating depths on separate days at my local range.

30.4gr. 4 shot groups @ 300 yards. Center circle is 1 inch (IBS 200yd hunter rifle targets).

Based on this, I figured it would be +.015, +.003 or -.003.

A week before the match, Rich (@Jet) invites us (@knguyen and myself) down to his range (it's a long 1.5 hour drive for me) to try out our loads at 550 yards.

5 shot groups @ 550 yards (red target = 2 inch circle):

This is not what I expected for these seating depths given what was observed at 300 yards.

Compared the above seating depths to these (+.018 and +.009) 5 shot groups @ 550 yards:

Retest +.018 and +.009 (to see if I get consistent tight groups) with 3 shot groups @ 550 yards:

So decided to go with +.018 seating depth for the match. Fortunate we were able to test the loads at distance. Had I not done so, I would have picked a seating depth that would not have shot as well (as you can see from the 550 targets).

Don't know if this helps, but just wanted to share my experience. Again, your mileage may vary.

BTW: Congrats to Rich (@Jet) for winning the NBRSA NW Regionals 600 and 1000 yard matches!!
