6.5x47 Lapua LR Bomber

Alf, Thanks for the reloading data using Varget. I compared various Varget loads from my old favorite 37.4 gr to 37.8, 38.2, 38.6, 39.0, & 39.1 Varget, bare 130 gr VLD Hunting 0.015" Jam and CCI 450. Never tried loads that hot before. Showed no visible signs of overpressure and didn't chronograph. Definitely showed preference for 39.0 & 39.1 gr. My rifle is a 8.5" twist Krieger and my 37.4 gr at 1000 yards appeared to fall off at 2850 fps. Hoping and thinking the 3000 fps node will hold up better. I have a Mcrees G7 stock with a bipod and Leupold 8.5-25x scope and I just can't seem to get rock steady and I'm getting 1.9"-2.1" groups at 535 yards so I know it will do better than I can hold it.

I generally balk at giving my loads, as I always shoot moly plated bullets. Your results mirror mine and most others for the most part. Seems custom actions tend to let a person run the upper nodes as well.

Bushing the boldface to .062" on a R700 will also allow one to run the upper nodes.

My 700's are all bushed, however, it didn't/doesn't stop tattoos and hard bolt lifts on mine w/upper nodes. They need to run in the 37.5-38 grain nodes.

I've got a Bighorn, and 39 grains is waaaaay too hot. Funny how some rifles can be so different.

Again, I shoot moly.......

Also, a 5R/C barrel can make a difference over a standard land/groove configuration.

I'm sorry guys, I made a mistake...my top end load with Varget is 38.1gr, NOT 39.1...I just checked that in my data book. MV with 38.1 is 2932 through a 28" 1-8" twist Broughton 5C

I think the short freebore some of yall are running in the nag fed rifles is the difference in the maxloads,,my Tac 30 repeater 6.5x47L has a .167 FB and the 130-140 VLD`s will fit in the AI mags seated .015 in the lands at 2.825 OAL,, I push the 130 VLD`s to 3015 fps from a 28" 5R Bartlien with 42 grs H4350 and have cases been loaded 30+ times and still hold primer fine,,

I have a new PredatorV RBLP SS action bedded in a ST-1000F stock and have a new Krieger 31" 4 groove 1.250 no taper 8 twist bbl at my gunsmiths he is gonna throat out a little past .200 freebore to shoot the 135 BIB`s with all the extra powder space we could get,,,I am gonna start with VVN550,H4350 and RL16 and the CCI450 primers,,,

I am really excited to try the long 4 groove Krieger and the longer FB with the BIB bullets at 600 yards,,,in theory it should be like turbocharging the 6.5x47L case,,the accuracy nodes may be the same but it should be able to either run faster or the same with less pressure,,

Finally got the new Marksman stock in from McMillan:

So I'm running a hair over 3000 with my "short" .123" freebore, don't have to run AI mags, and mine fit in a plain 'ol BDL setup with an OAL length of 2.735"........

42.2 gr of H4350 gets me to 2980 fps out of a 26” Broughton. This is with a 130 Berger hunting. RBROS built 6.5x47. Bought a couple pounds of Varget to try but H4350 shoots so good I haven’t tried it.

Recently had a 6.5x47 built myself. Stiller Tac30, Kreiger 1:8 twist finished at 26”. Began working up from 37.4g to 39.1g of Varget. 39.0g of Varget showed the best producing the 0.49” group shown below at 200 yds, of course shot number 5 opened it up quite a bit but still 1/4 MOA. Shooting 130 VLD Hunting at 2995 fps.

Not a damn thing wrong with that group! Nice shooting.:D:D

Next outing, shooting the same load at 600yds. Had potential for a great group but as usual one got away. I’ll blame it on a puff of wind LOL. Four shots in 0.95”, five shots in 2.85”, hardly any vertical though.
