tips for bench testing rimfire

I scored an old Walther and would really like to test it out of the stock to see just what it's capable of. I had one old rimfire guy tell me to take it out of the stock, clamp it in a vise, and test it this way. Anyone ever do this?

No ! Barrel /receiver vibrations , harmonics will not be dampened . It could work or could give you a lot of useless information .
Pillar or glass bed the rifle and test with a large variety of ammo .
Remember std vel good match ammo . And shoot 2-3 groups after changing ammo lots or brands to clear out previous lube .
