Rem 721 extractor replacement

My dad has a Remington 721 in .270 Win that is not extracting spent casings.

Where can I order a replacement extractor for this model, will a 700 extractor work?

Second, can you use the same tool as the 700 to replace firing pin spring(never been changed since new in 1954)?

Thanks in advance!

721/722/600/660/Xp-100 extractors are NOT the same as riveted 700/40X extractors & are NOT interchangeable.

721 extractors are NOT available.

Yes,721 & 700 L/A mainsprings are interchangeable & shroud threads are the same(1/2"-13tpi)

Thanks a lot for your input.

Then how does a man replace a defective extractor on a Remington 721?

A milling machine to install an aftermarket SAKO or Mini 16 or M16 type extractor.
OR
Purchase/fit from your OEM bolt a PT&G 721 or 700 L/A bolt body w/ OEM Rem snap in extractor or w/options listed above.

Ray Gregg at Bear Creek Guns in Washington used to do a conversion to the riveted type, but he passed away a few years back. I may have one in my stuff. I know I have several .222 722 extractors. Let me look tomorrow.

I had the same problem with my rem 722, rivet type extractor. I researched my alternatives as the original extractors are
not available. I wound up having a Sako type extractor installed on my bolt. It works flawlessly. I did not have to replace the bolt with all the problems that go with that. Gunsmith Tim Malcolm in Arkansas did the work very nicely.

Roger.

Any contact information for Tim Malcolm?

Thanks kendog!

Forgot to check today. I will look first thing in the morning.
The mini 16 types are supposed to be safer than the Sako. They all cut through the bolt nose and interrupt the "ring of steel".
All aftermarket extractor mods require careful machining, some to the barrel as well as the bolt. The 721/722 are a snap in type, different from the current 700 snap in.
Another option would be snag a 700 LA bolt off ebay or gunbroker. They dont seem to bring as much $$ as short bolts. VERY good chance it will head space in a 721 that hasn't been messed with and all you would have to do is open up the stock for the bolt handle.

Bolt is on it's way back to you. One of your problems was someone tried to fit a rivet type 700 extractor in there. Really messed up the bolt nose doing it also. 721-722 extractors on the right, yours on the left. Notice the single hole for the rivet and the 721 part has two elongated holes on the ends, and is held in by tension and the rim on the bolt nose. The rivet type is probably still good for it's original purpose!

If anyone is interested, I have one each of these left. Made from pure unobtanium! One small (.222) and one standard (30-06).721 Extractor (2).JPG 721 Extractor (3).JPG 721 Extractor (4).JPG 721 Extractor (5).JPG
