You're right, Monte. I recall many occasions shooting at Phoenix when slingers outnumbered F-Class. They were very free with insults, derision, snide remarks, crappy squadding and other, childish BS. Now, they are a dwindling minority, feel the pain, and they don't like it. Oh, well.

competitive shooting in any discipline is good for everyone, I don't see any good coming from division among us, I wouldn't be opposed to slings and F class on separate weekends, sling shooting is my first love but I like to do both and have friends on both ends of the line, it's a great event that I've been blessed to attend and sponsor from the beginning.

I concur Gary, but it seems as though some readers got their shorts in a wad which was not my intention. I'm not interested in engaging in a pi$$ing contest.
If I count my smallbore years, I've been shooting sling and irons since 1954. Some layoffs during the intervening years, but sling nevertheless. My present goal, eyesight willing, is to be able to shoot sling/irons at age 80, a little over a year from now. Then I may consider sling/scope or possibly FTR. Bottom line is I'll keep shooting as long as I can sans the "insults, derision, snide remarks, crappy squadding and other, childish BS". And continue to wish every success to all shooters.

That's the problem - those F-Open guys driving their F-250s to the line and needing a pack mule to move all their equipment! Seriously, though, we need to pretty well bring the heavy front rest, rifle, rear bag, ammo, range bag, plotting sheets, spotting scope (yes, some of us even use those things) etc. and usually do so very quickly from where the cart is parked, which is against the railing. The congestion I am referring to is the carts and equipment, behind the line. We cannot leave some of it in the car as the 1000 yard line is elevated and would require a major walk, with or without the cart. I don't care either way - if management decides to add relays or whatever, we will go with the flow and play by house rules.
On another note, I have the highest respect for sling shooters to be able to shoot at a 1000 yard target looking through a peep hole, wearing a straight jacket, basking in 150 degrees ..... all the while the blood circulation is cut off by that sling and your wrist feels like a foreign object after you are done shooting (no feeling in it). Been there, done that, hated it. So, nothing against sling shooters, except respect.

I would love to have the opportunity to shoot either discipline, or both. Choosing is what keeps me in F-class.
And I, too, have been there and done that when magnums ruled the Earth. I've returned from Pendleton many weekends with a bruised shoulder and five pounds lighter. The difference is, I never belittled other shooters or suggested they go shoot somewhere else.

To me what is important is having the line full regardless of what discipline you shoot. I remember when the Berger looked like a well attended weekend match. I stood at the top of the ramp at the 1000 yard line with Eric Stecker and Mid Tompkins discussing how neat it would be to see 100 targets in the air some day. Well it happened! Thanks to everyone from the pits to the line and all of the countless people that made the Berger Southwest Nationals what it is today. Matt, Michelle, Nancy, Mid and Eric have allowed us all to do what we love for a week every year.
I have been allowed to shoot on the same target with the match winner as well as some up and coming juniors. This sport allows all who come to compete and will force you to shoot your best every time. I was always amazed how a competitor will go out of their way to help you improve and be truly happy to have help you.
I will deal with congestion, pulling targets, and not finishing in the money. Just to enjoy the great people that I have met in long range shooting community and also happened to become life long friends.

This will be the first Berger SWN for my 15 year old and I, Looking forward to the opportunity to shoot with some of the best out there! I would love to see everyone be able to shoot this match but I know there are limitations. That being said, I really happy my son will get the chance to compete and experience it. It's going to be a great 11 day excursion for the two of us coming back to my home state from Montana!

There's no KD range in the world that can handle 1,000 shooters for a real match. So someone is going to be left out in the cold. This match has apparently become "the one".
Where are all these shooters for all the other big matches? The AZ Palma will have 50, The AZ LR will do even less. The Creedmoor may not be around much longer. The other AZ state / regional's held at BA are nothing more than local matches anymore.
The big LR matches at Raton have all but disappeared. If the National Fullbore Championships (SOA) gets 75 I will be surprised.
There are lots of great shooting opportunities all over the country that truly need this type of support if the game is to survive.

Everything you say is true and it would be great if other matches had better attendance. However, in the marketplace of available shooting opportunities, this match has clearly competed effectively and the attendees have voted with their dollars and time. When you have a limited availability commodity, you can:
- Restrict access
- Charge more
- Make more available
That's how a free market works.
We used to shoot at "Ft. Walters, Texas. It was a very humbling feeling when you were back on the 600yd. line and could look across and see that there were 10 100-point berms lined up. Can you imagine how many troops it took to fill that up?
