Driving People Away from Shooting

Liven The Dream

Gold $$ Contributor
I have been Shooting High Power , Palma and a little F/TR for 40 years.
I see more more than once the Attitude of Official drive people away.
I am now one of those who will most likely never shoot in the State of Oregon again.
( sorry as I vent).

When I relocated to Central Oregon there was a KD Range being built, I got in involved .
The Fine Man running the project Pass Away. I stepped up and finished the Range after four years and a bad back. We held NRA Match and where growing.
I got invited to coffee one day, only to meet the Guys taking over. I was very slow to get the point ! I was going to be gone one way or the other.
It took a year of one liners and accusations .

I moved on and just Shot at other Ranges in the Area.
There is a very popular 1000 yard Match every year in Oregon. I have shoot it for 14 Plus years.
Like all things it came to screaming Halt.
This Match Entry States you must be a Member of the State Association....
I sent my Dues in Oct. 2016 ( Form states 1 year $25.00 ) . I received a back dated card to Feb. 2016 . I sent emails and called everyone I could think of. I was told we are looking in to it ? Never did anyone reply a thing.
I get to Match and am told by the Match Director " I called you have NOT payed fill this out with $25.00 and I'll Squad you" I had looked up our Bank Statement , they took my my. I was sure I paid.
I took the road back Home.
Just because I didn't like being called out in front of 30 people, I sent the Match Director a copy of my Bank Statement . Won't hold my breath .

So is this type of thing going help get more or less people involved ?

When I first moved to Oregon in late 2013 Don was one of the first shooters I made contact with. He ran the range out near Bend and was glad to have me come shoot. Showed up in April just to practice while they ran a clinic and lo and behold - 6" of snow everywhere. Clinic canceled yet Don put up a target in freezing weather just so I could shoot a little before the 4 hr. ride home. He's a first class gentleman who will be SORELY missed in Oregon. With Oregon politics become more 'Kalifornia'-like every day I may be following him!

Sadly range management gets political all too often. People get control and want things done their way and all too often it does lead to people getting discouraged and leaving. Even the different parent organizations cannot agree on rules for different disciplines.

Humans are prone to be cliquish and that does not bode well to advance our sport. New shooters and seasoned competitors as well can be easily put off by authoritative and arrogant attitudes of the powers that be.

From what I read about the great state of Oregon it seems to be a goodish mess.

Don,

Prescott Lakes is a nice area but don't forget to check out some of the other areas as well. It's up in the 90's today and tomorrow with the possibility of a little Monsoon sprinkle.

Regards.

Thanks we have a list , no snap jump on it's .

Its amazing the influence one person can have on a multitude of people, either positive or negative.

Don looks to be squarely on the positive side.

The guy the happens to run my range is on the negative side and is a pure jackass. He seems to really take it out on the younger shooters. It's a shame he is that way. Much to Don's concern, they are the future of the sport.
