Bino trouble, what would you call it?

I have a pair of binos that won't hold focus evenly after changing center focus for a different range. I have to refocus the diopter every time. What would you call that type of defect? ( for warranty porposes) thanx Mike A

Sounds like a cheap pair or something is wrong. I can go different yardages with my Swarovski and others and can focus. I never have to touch my diopter. Matt

As long as you are properly adjusting the diopter as follows:

1) With you right eye closed while viewing an object at long range, turn the 'focus knob' on the binos until you have a nice crisp view through the left barrel.

2) Then with your left eye closed, do not touch the focus knob and adjust only the diopter wheel until the right barrel gives you the same crisp clear view. Diopter adjustment is complete.

You should now have a nice clear picture with both eyes open and it should stay this way from the closest focusing distance to the farthest distance you can see.

*Make sure you are viewing a distant object when adjusting a diopter. The adjustment will be much more finely tuned this way.
*If your eyes have trouble refocusing quickly after being closed, you can substitute covering the right and left barrels of the binos with your hands for the steps above. This way your eyes stay open the whole time.

If the diopter has been properly adjusted and this is occuring, then it definitely sounds like an optics defect in the focus adjustment where the lenses in the barrels are not moving uniformly. You should contact the manufacturer and make a warranty claim.

You are exactly correct with regard to proper initial focus/set-up. I won't drop names but I expected a little more from $500 German glasses. Downloaded there warranty form today. Thanx Mike A

Well ya never know. Even the best of them make mistakes. No manufacturer can make every product off the line perfect with no flaws. Its standing behind the product that really counts. So if they correct the issue with no complaints then mentioning their name would actually be giving them praise.

I've had Leica Ultravid binoculars mess up on me before where it was getting air pockets behind one of the front lenses. But they got them repaired as fast as possible with no charge. Great service and had me back in the field with minimal downtime.

I've had a set of Vortex Razor HD binoculars mess up too. Eye cup kept spinning and coming loose on the right barrel. Took them to the retailer, they made a call to Vortex and they paid the retailer to send me out the door with a brand new set of $1200 Razor HD binoculars off the shelf. Can't beat that service ;)

Things happen. No big deal so long as the company makes it right.

Tho a $500 German set of binos? Definitely not high end German optics.....Steiner?...Minox?

I was thinking the same thing...not knocking your binos by any means, still though, they should work right. The most cost effective German optics will still beat the best Asian stuff any day. I don't know, it might be your eyes too. I have a buddy that has a similar problem with binos. Do you have to do a lot of turning on your scopes eyepiece to focus the reticle???? It would seem like the difference in your eyes {diopter adjustment} would be constant over any range or distance...but maybe not.

Send em in and get them fixed or a new pair. Easy as that. Did it with my father in laws leupold binos, they went way outta focus.
