Front sight mount for heavy Palma barrel?

Anyone know of a good front sight base that will work with a heavy Palma contour barrel (typically 0.900" dia @ 30" length) *without* having to turn it down to a 0.750" tenon? Turning down a medium doesn't look too bad; relieving that much metal off a heavy contour barrel just makes me nervous - and looks weird.

Years ago when I first started out I had a Tompkins front sight base (barrel band that a dovetail front sight clamped onto) that fit on a 0.820 (factory 700VS) without too much machining... but that style of front sight then forces all the elevation changes to be done with the rear sight, which in turn screws with the head position and cheek weld. So I'd rather not go that route again. More interested in a side-bar front sight like the Ken Porter one I have now.

Thanks,

Monte

Depending on what sight you're running there are larger barrel bands. The right sight could be had with an .812" base. I think Riles makes one for his as well. I think Champions Choice still has some RIght Sight bases.

I think 0.812" was what that old Tompkins dovetail mount was.

I just found out that the Right Sight is out of production :( It looked like they made some custom 'jumbo' mounts to accommodate bloop tubes and such. Not wild about buying pieces of something that is discontinued, but those sights were really really nice!

Looks like Phoenix maybe makes some bigger options as well? Last time I was shopping for iron sight stuff, I'm not even sure Phoenix *made* front sights. I do have one of their rear sights, though. Good stuff

I would look at the Riles Sight. It's akin to a Right Sight, but a little different in appearance. Very well made sight.

Phoenix makes good stuff but I like the 30mm front sights better than the 22mm sights. I run Phoenix rear sights on my rifles and have been very pleased with them.

Wasn't aware that Scott was still making sights. I'll take a look at them, thanks!

I've got a little bit invested in 22mm sight stuff already... but given what the lenses cost relative to a decent target scope, I'm not going to quibble over it much ;)

I got ahold of Kenny Porter... my existing front sight is one of his older ones. Sounds like he has a 0.875" front sight base available for it, but he did express some concern that its starting to get kinda thin at that point. Still, I kind of like the idea of not having to hog a bunch off of an otherwise perfectly good heavy Palma contour.

The next question will be whether the lighter weight hardware on a McMillan XIT is up to the rigors of being used with a sling. Same recoil, but definitely some more wrenching/torqueing on the buttplate as the gun is mounted... at least the way I do it

Trying to avoid just building a new one from the ground up... but if it comes to that I do have a perfectly good Masterclass stock blank sitting in the basement, and a spare action (or two)... if only I hadn't sold the 'extra' Krieger 11 tw medium Palma I had kickin' around to Anette Wachter in February :D
