Making your own bullets.

So I somehow wound up on Corbins website looking at bullet making press and other supplies.
I am curious how do these bullets stack up in quality and consistency vs Berger if the person making them is compitent? What about BC numbers? I saw that they have rebated boat tail end and such?

Any one here does it?
Can you tell me about it, I am curious about the process and the reasons behind it.

Been there, done that. It's a hell of a lot of work...... Discovered there are other things i'd rather be doing. Spend the money on bullets ,primers and power.

It has to be an area of your shooting that you are truly interested in and enjoy as much as shooting.
Because it does take a lot of time to ever get to making a decent bullet
I personally don't know of any competition level bullet makers using Corbin
Again unless it's something you have a real interest in you can buy a heck of a lot of Barts bullets and spend your time at the range

If you want the satisfaction of seeing the bullets you made go in the same hole catch up with @geo.ulrich

It takes alot of time and money. Different punches every time something changes. Then you need GOOD JACKETS, if they 're available. I believe a good set of carbide dies and punches is close to 10,000. Only a few people make them. Matt

dkhunt14, if you would like a real deal on a first class set of 30 Cal. carbide dies, presses and punches, for a wee bit under $10,000.00, please contact me.

Corbins dies is good enough to build all the bullets your going to shoot . If your going into the bullet making business you will need carbide. And their not cheap.
Sure isn't anything I would do. Larry

I was just saying what the guys making them said. The big bullets are i guess more expensive. I only know of three makers in the country that. Make dies and I heard one isn't making them. Then it is almost impossible to get the long jackets needed. J4 won't sell them. That came from guys trying to get them. They don't want Competition for their 210, 215 and 230. So jackets are limited. I wouldn't even think about making them. Two of my buddies do and it is alot of work. Then you need good jackets or it does no good. Probably why you don't see the 200 grain and up custom bullets that we need and use. Matt

Oi Hey! You lost me after 10 grand and massive time investment.
For that much effort I'm better off getting some super duper precision lathe and turning my own by the sound of it!

Yeah by the time it's all said and done if rather be out on the range shooting.

Not that I need custom bullets.
After the car accident and the shoulder surgery I am a 1moa shooter on a good day.

No one that I am aware of has ever used Corbin equipment to make benchrest quality bullets. There was a very good thread on Benchrest Central about bullet making that you should read. IMO it is the best presentation of up to date information that I have seen. http://benchrest.com/showthread.php?94910-Another-Bullet-Making-Thread-(lots-of-photos-amp-video)

Thank's Boyd. Both you and Lee have a talent for writing something that can be understood. For those pistol guys Lee has some serious eye candy on his website.

.

You can make bullets, and it is easy, once you get the materials you need. They are not perfect, but they shoot really well. We get our dies from RCE, Inc. They make a fine bullet with tighter tolerance than mass production runs. Lots of playing and options once you get the equipment. Tight groups are that much sweeter when you "roll your own" bullets. Some of these are made from spent .22, .22mag, or 17HMR brass.

I've made my own bullets for 40 years. It's a steep learning curve and requires a significant investment but not anywhere close to $10,000. Corbin is not the place to be. In my view there really is two avenues that you can pursue. The first is bullets for your own consumption that can be made with dies such as Blackman or a good used set of carbide dies. There are enough dies around it shouldn't be too difficult to find a suitable set. When good jackets are available you buy enough to last YOU for a long time that eliminates the need for constantly chasing punches.
The other path is commercial bullet making. I did that gig for quite a few years and wouldn't do it again for 3 times the money. As some of the other guys have pointed out, it's a pain trying to keep up with jackets, punches and all the other challenges of making several hundred thousand bullets per year. Welding yourself to a bullet press is not my idea of a good time. On the other hand I do have a lifetime supply of BR quality bullets and some really nice A2 pressed that I still use. I think I'll go fishing this afternoon.

I believe Alan Warner has $150,000 in his bullet making lathe. That is the worst thing that a person could do to make bullets.
