17-204 vs 20 Practical

Have a Ritch Johnson built AR 20 Practical that I just love. It scatters the gophers and shoots like a laser but I was curious how the 17-204 compares to the 20 Practical in the carnage department & how it shoots. Looking at building another AR.

The .17/204 is a bad mo-fo! But I'd build it on a bolt gun, though & stick with the .20Prac in your AR.

.17cal hotrods are very cool, just wouldn't want to mess with it in a gas gun...

Have fun!

For those who live in severely restricted states such as California - be aware there is not a single .17 caliber unleaded bullet for hand loading - and that is the new legal bullet.

I need to re read the law but I believe that makes them exempt from the lead law.

I was able to acquire a supply of the "new" Lehigh Defense .17 caliber 20 grain bullets just days before the deadline for mail-order purchases in California. If it weren't bad enough we now must use non-lead for all hunting, now we can't purchase brass, ammo or bullets through the mail. Good-bye Powder Valley and all my other favorite retailers. O.K. - enough ranting. I'm really happy someone came up with a .17 lead-free for us reloaders. Has anyone out there loaded these things in a .17 Hornet? Loads? Results? Your input is very much appreciated.

I have a 17-204 in a bolt gun and a 17-223 in a AR-15 both are fast and accurate. If I only had one it would be a 17-223 or a 17 predator in a bolt gun. The small 17 hole shooting about the same amount of powder will foul faster than the parent cartridge thats for sure, I do clean them more often.

Searcher...California's new laws do not restrict online purchases of reloading components. Some online sellers may mistakenly believe it's not legit to ship reloading components; if so they need to be educated.

If one reads the law - it is pretty clear about bullets and brass as they are specifically named along with loaded ammo. Unfortunately, I read it the same as they do, as do all the major retailers I usually buy from. Keep in mind the sellers probably don't care - especially if they are out of State.

The law prevents online sale of projectiles (bullets) only to "Prohibited Persons", meaning those that are not legally allowed to own firearms.

SB1235, Section 2, 16150(b) - the definition of ammunition: "Ammunition" includes, but is not limited to, any bullet, cartridge, magazine clip, speed loader, auto-loader, or projectile capable of being fired from a firearm with deadly consequence, "Ammunition" does not include blanks.

There is no separate definition of ammunition for "prohibited persons". I do believe "bullet" and "projectile" and "cartridge" pretty well covered bullets and brass. One can interpret this any way one wants.....

This is the way it is published:

16150.
(a) As used in this part, except as specified in subdivision (b), “ammunition” means one or more loaded cartridges consisting of a primer case, propellant, and with one or more projectiles. “Ammunition” does not include blanks.
