zero at 56 yds

Sorry to ask this question but time is not on my side..
I put a new scope on my Rem 700 in 243. / 65 gr Vmax. Scope is a Leupold 4x12 Ballistic Fire Dot. Scope sits right above the bbl with low rings..
I zeroed it the other day at 56 yds. Now I have varmint that will be 100 yds from my stand / blind..
At 100 will I be high or low when zeroed at 56 yds?
Sorry I will not have the opportunity to test it at 100 yds.
Thanks in advance.

It depends on exactly how far the centerline of the scope is from the bore, if it is real low like 1" you may never get above .5" high and be back to zero before 175 yds, if its 2"+ like most of us with 50mm or larger objectives it will be around 1" high from 100-150 and be back to zero between 225-250 yds.

One advantage of a 50 yard sight is that shooter error doesn't have the same effect as a longer sight in distance. However ballistic performance should be verified at the actual distances you intend to shoot.

When I sighted in the new scope the other day.. 56 yards was the longest, safest shot I could take. The family land now has some corn on it and it is along a highway.. so the proverbial 100 yds.. was not safe.
We have a huge, diurnal "coon" eating the corn I'm putting out for deer.. I put out corn to try and keep deer out of sunflowers.
The corn pile is 100 yrds from ladder stand.
Now you know.

One problem which you might consider when sighting in at short range is scope cant.

You want to make sure you get your scope as perfectly aligned, horizontally and vertically, with your bore as you can.

If you do not, you will find your bullets flying to one side or the other at longer distances.

Better yet a have a heart trap and a stock tank..

I had a chance on Independence Day to stretch out the yardage.. I shot and I was still low and left at 91 yds.. ( longest I could get right now.. I shot twice each time dialing up the elevation. Now she's is pretty close at 91 yrds.. close enough..

Coon still lives...:) smart, fat bugger.. he has evaded the trap(s) that have been set.. one got into my dad's corn about. .3 miles away. He's not happy.. So, what to do?

Shoot. That's what I would do.

Night vision scope. Spend $3,000 for one, lose sleep and get bit by bugs waiting, then wait more as the coon will spot you and stay away until you leave.

Keep a cheap 22 by the door or window. spot something and it will work.

Either way if you sight in dead on at 56 yards, that big old coon is dead if you aim dead center out to 250 yards on him with that 65 vmax. Good luck. Post a pic of him belly up.
