300 WSM 1000 yard ladder test.

Thanks for the info James. My next build is a 300wsm HG and I'm still unsure what bullet/weight to concentrate on. Seeing your current/pending results are provocative.

Bob

The reason I went with the mid weight bullets was mainly I find that they're more consistent over the heavies. That and a few custom bullet makers do make bullets in the 200-210 weight range.

Thanks for the report James,
I am also shooting a 300 WSM in a Maxi Tracker with a Brux 10 tw barrel. My load is 61.5 of H4350 BR2's and 210 VLD's .010 ITL. My velocity is @2830-2850. It is shooting good. Looks like yours is gonna be a shooter. :D

Good Luck

James that looks like it is going to be a shooter. I love the WSM. What freebore you running. I have the same freebore as Ray and can't shoot that much powder. Usually about 62 tops with an 11 twist. I also like the hunting 210 VLD bullets. Matt

@Bart B.
I find your replies here to James' thread and his shared test results condescending at the least, that in many ways reminds me of a fguffey type incentive and mentality.

On this forum, accuracy results and the endeavors to them are often shared, discussed, and applauded, which symbolizes the forums name, "Accurate Shooter", well.
James is no new comer to accuracy or competition, and his precision accuracy accomplishments and skills are of a long list and over many years. I respect, welcome, and applaud them, no matter the magnitude.

My Thanks goes to @JamesnTN for sharing.... inspiring and envy !.!.!

Wow, pretty harsh, Donovan. ;)

James I can get 63.5 out of mine without any pressure but I'm at 62.5 right now. I have an old Obermyer 36" 1-10 twist and at 2960fps I thought I was going a little fast for the 210 VLD's but they seem to be shooting OK but I'm getting a little more vertical than I want. I'm at 10 off but this week before the World Open I may try 15 and 20 off because I have extra loaded.
And good luck with your shooting.

Joe,

I went up to 64.5 with no signs of pressure. I don't remember the chrono numbers off the top of my head. I maybe could squeeze another grain of powder but I don't see the need to.

When I did a ladder test on seating at 600 yards -.005 and +.005 also looked good. Tomorrow I'm going to test those again along with then-.015 at 1K and see what happens. This time I'll do 5 shots of each.

Well today I took the 300 WSM back out to 1000 yards to reverify last weeks results and I'm convienced that maybe that 3 shots wasn't a fluke after all.
Today's results didn't yield the same type of group but it's good enough for me for a different day and sitting.

Today I shot 63.7 grains of H4350 with a F210m primer using the 210 Berger VLD, where as last week I shot 63.5 I had a decent node of 63.5 and 64.0 so I split the difference between them.

Here are today's results

Are those shot at 1K ?? if so save that barrel and not put another round down that thing until you're at a registered match.

***what is the jump on the 2.450 oal?

Here is another good example of why you can't go by ES or SD and have little vertical at 1000. It just doesnt work that way. You may get lucky but most times it will go vertical. I saw this on most guns. Matt

Matt -
Even though I have always agreed and seen the same thing for many years, now since LabRadar (more accurate then eye sensored chronographs) have been repeatedly seeing it more and more yet.
Not that bad ES is better, just that lowest ES has not been the best on the targets.

So for you long range shooters what do you find to be a somewhat avg on ES and SD at 1K in accuracy testing?
I know for me at 600 it's usually an ES of 12-18 fps is where I find my loads to yield the best accuracy.

@JamesnTN
IME - that can very from cartridge to cartridge, but for the most part under 20-ES is typically one of my priorities.
Can't speak to a number for the low side yet from LabRadar, want to see a year or more worth of data.

That is what is the most important; what works for you, from your rifle, setup, and handloads.

It usually shits the bed when I dip under 10 or so.;)

Are you gonna do a fine powder ladder next?

Tom

Tom

I'll stay at the 63.5-63.7 charge. I have found in the past the larger cases don't show much in accuracy change on anything under .4 grains of powder. I've tested from 59.0-64.5 grains in .5 grain increments And it appears my sweet spot is going to be the 63.5 - 64.0 grain range. If temps dip down say below 50* I'll move up to 64.0 and above 90 I'll drop back to 63.5. I'm satisfied with the results it's given in that range during my testing to say it's good enough to take to a match and be competitive.

Yea, everybody can't be wrong. 1953 replies to LONGERANGE LOAD DEVELOPMENT AT 100 YARDS. MATT

I must be one of the few unlucky ones. I've never to date been able to take a group that consistently shot in the .1's and under that yielded the same results at 600.
Just an example the other day I was testing primers at 100 yards from my BRA and by looking at the targets, if I had to choose right then what to take to a match I'd chosen the CCI 450's solely based on the multiple groups shot that yielded .1 accuracy. But then I took 3 different loads each at 600 using the 450's and 400's and the 400's outshot the 450's comsiderably. At 100 those same loads were in the mid .2's - low .3's with the 400's so either I can't shoot at 100 yards for testing or I'm just unlucky.

I was just poking fun. Ok never had that luck either. My best 100 yard stuff and chrono results never seem to hold at 1000. Matt
