no pitting below, all I have is the action nothing elseIf it has light pitting on the side visible above the stock line, you should check for pitting below the stock line. Especially if you are planning on buying it.
It's a german made of some manufacture, very likely DMW. The stuff you need to really identify it is kind a polished off. It started to say Waffen something. It is a large ring and I would call that heavily pitted and personally, I wouldn't mess with it. The extractor has been altered so it will close on a chambered round and the front of the receiver has been cut and I'm not sure that you'll find it square. I would PM "Bob the Nailer" and see if you can send him detailed pictures. He is very knowledgeable on 98's. I've done a bunch but nowhere near him. My opinion only, just looking at the pics, someone tried to modify a military action without sufficient skills.Any idea where it was made? Or the value? The guy wants me to sell it for him.
Large rings measure 1.4" OD on the front ring, small rings measure 1.3" OD. Large rings threads are 1.1x12 TPI, small ring threads are .980x12 TPI. Small ring 98's are all WW1 vintage Kar 98's and that is not one. That is more than likely a WW2 vintage. It's a german made of some manufacture, very likely DMW.
