Barrel Vise pads

I take some oak blocks the right size to fit clamp (3x3x2) for mine, pick a forstner bit the diameter of the barrel, drill it out, split the block down the center of the hole with a saw, apply an ample coat of rosin powder on inside of blocks, clamp and remove the barrel, no marks and cleans off with a wipe of WD-40,

I made my vise to use various size split aluminum inserts but after making the first one with a 1 1/2" opening and wrapping the barrel with some leather from old welding chaps I don't think I'll make any more. it clamped it down tight with no marks and is adjustable just by wrapping enough leather around it to get a nice fit then tightening the 4 bolts down.

I've been re-barreling rifles for about 20 years and have never owned a barrel vise. I do have a good pipe vise and I make brass and aluminum split bushings for jaws. I use a piece of card stock type paper wrapped around the barrel, inside of the bushings. This works great for me and if you do happen to run into one that is just super tight, if the barrel is junk anyway, just don't use the bushings at all. It'll certainly marr the barrel but it has never slipped, either. Lol!
I've got a good pipe vise and have been thinking of doing this to.

H frame hyd shop press, aluminum bushings turned to brrl profile.Sheetrock tape, powdered rosin,or powdered sugar, whichever is closest at the time.

When first reading post, thought you were asking about "bench" vise jaw stock....for maintenance,to maybe include a barrel.Delrin if I'm trying to impress, oak pr maple if it's laying around.....lead sheet is always good just wrapped halfarsed over stock jaws.Copper sheet works this way too.

That's the general setup I use. I have some steel inserts for the bushing block for the really stubborn ones. I also use scrap copy bond paper. There's always some around, it seems.
