Why CCi 450 primers in a 6.5x47 case?

My gun was just built for 1000 yard sling shooting Bat 3lug long action Krieger 30 inch med contour palmer 8twist, Anschutz 2 stage prone 7oz trigger and a McMillan prone stock. So to my question . Why use magnum primers in the 6.5x47 lapua case? I know the obvious some loads shoot better with them. But why? Is it a higher velocity, or for slower burning powders? The weight of the bullet? I would never think of using magnum rifle primers in a 3o8 or a 6br or my 6ppc??? Why not stick with bench rest ,205m br4s small primers? The case capacity is not that great in this round.

Popularity. The BR4 works just fine. Floating around in cyber-space somewhere, you'll find a response from our good friend Laurie. He found the BR4 to be a bit too hot for the 6BR, 6BRDX, Dasher, etc, with the 450 a better match for those cases. With the 6.5x47 having more case capacity, the BR4 is probably the better number to use. The bigger powder column would benefit from the extra heat/flame duration the BR4 provides.

I think there are several advantages to using the 450 primers. Those that chronograph their loads report a smaller ES when using them. I use them in both of my 6BR's (14 twist with 65gr bullets for short range matches and an 8 twist with 105's for midrange). It probably has a lot to do with getting a good initial spark to get the powder burning quickly, especially when using Varget or other slower powders. If you are running loads on the hot side, the harder cups in the magnums is a plus.

It's a good, consistant primer and it handles high pressures very well. Between the strength of the 47L case and the tough cup on the 450 you have to be careful you don't push the pressures too high. Both hide pressure a little too well.

Ok a little confused, I thought that magnum primers were Hotter than std and used for larger cases? JRS, the BR4 is hotter than a 450? And yes I do plan on trying them both. I have run back to back blind test to see if primer really make a difference with a known load and could not believe how my groups opened up by just changing out the primer.

I started a thread the other day based on my frustration with CCI BR4s in my 6x47L..and I've yet to find a load with the BR4s that are under 2" at 100yds...so as of today, I'm not a fan of CCI primers period other than the fact that they can take higher pressures. My federal primers have always given me the best groups & In my 6x47 it's a half minute or better load but I have some pressure issues. So I wanted to replace them with a BR4s and all hell breaks loose groups are huge, 2"+ . I seriously don't know how guys get these CCIs to shoot worth a damn in their rifles.

Both Laurie Holland and German Salazar, via extensive testing, found the BR4 to produce more heat/flame duration than the 450. They also found the 450 to be a better match for the smaller cases such as the 223 with heavier bullets, along with the 6BR family, with the larger 6.5x47 and 308 size cases producing better results with the BR4. Both gentlemen are well respected. When you change out primers, you are going to have to change the charge weight also.

Try some Rem 7.5's. Hard cup, very accurate in lots of lifles.

Play around with your powder charge weights. It takes a bit of time, but, you'll get it figured out

I use br'4s with H4350 in mine and it's good enough to win, I tried 450's and the groups got twice as big. You need to try them to see what shoots best.
