contaminated powder from factory?

The load was right out of my berger manual.
Stopp429, I believe jrs was talking about ledd slingers post not yours, I may be wrong but don't think so. I think 4831 is too slow for your cartridge also. I think the 4350 would be a better choice..

Its just that i have a bunch of h4831sc laying around
Yeah, I run H4831 out of my 25/06 and really like it. It just does a better job in the bigger cases. Out of those 2 powders 4350 seems to be the better choice. Try some H4895,IMR4064,or Varget and see how it shoots. I Think you will like any of them.

Called hodgdon and they are sending a new bottle and im sending the old one in. They said it should not smell the way it does. Ledd Slinger this same brass and bullet combo and primers had been used with h4350 and imr 4350 with no ill factors. I joined this forum to be able to ask questions and recive answers from knowledgeable people. Im sorry i wasnt born will all the knowlege that you have. I didnt have a mentor to teach me these things im learning as i go.

I apologize for being a little crude. Nothing wrong with asking questions. Just makes it a little easier for folks to help if you do more leg work before asking. Otherwise theres a lot of shooting in the dark. Sounds like Hodgdon gave you your answer. Hope that fixes the issue. Whenever you have a problem with a new product, the best thing to do as a first step is contact the manufacturer. If you still have the same problem with the new bottle of powder, then you probably need to inspect/ream flash holes and try a different primer. If that doesnt fix it, we got a little pickle to figger out. Good luck.

Shot some loads with imr 4350 same brass and primers etc..... shot perfect no odd noise. Hopefully the new stuff shows up today or tommorow so i can get some loaded up for the weekend. I hope Hodgdon will let some info out once they recive the powder i have now. I dont know how tight lipped they are when it comes to this. I ran some primers in with my old hornady hand primer that has pretty good feel to it. When primers bottomed out they varied from .004" to .013". Now With my new frankford hand primer that seats to a selected depth im stuck seatinf at the low end and then going back with the hornady and finishing them. What a pain.

They said there will be a return label in the box and to pack it in the box they send and send it back. I didnt know i could i thought you had to have a hazmat licence.

I can't believe there would be that much difference in primer seating. I Also Winchester and CCI primers are two that are hard to get to fire. If the fire control is weak or they are not bottomed out they can and will cause Misfires and hang fires. Matt.

I opened a new box of 100 win cases and about 10 were defective with deep folds in the shoulder or split necks. I measured some pockets and they vary alot as well. My hornady and lapua cases dont vary much in primer pocket depth. Im kinda getting tired of buying winchester just to throw away 10% of them.

I know it's only 10 but I would call them and make them ship you out a return tag and return them.. I to am tired of paying for stuff thats new and broken. I just sent a 1k pack of berry 9mm bullets back becouse some were out of spec. They paid for everything and returned a new pack. It seems like QC is crap everywere. Now, I don't care if I have to drive into town I send it back. Its the only way they know about QC problems. And iam sick of throwing money in the trash.

Glad they helped with the powder if you been at this awhile normally what you think is wrong is it. Just a process of eliminating variables. Let us know if the new powder fixes it. Like I said iam not useing that powder but none of mine smells sweet.. And reloading 9mm a pound lasts becouse it loads 1500 rounds.

I did get the new powder and it smells like it should. So im going to work up some loads this week and hopefully hit the range next weekend if it ever quits snowing.

I am glad you got good customer service from Hodgon and got some foul smelling (regular) powder. I usually don't make a habit of going around smelling powders but I never remember getting any that smelled a little sweet. I have Winchester 785 powder that was discontinued by Winchester in the 1980's and it still shoots great in my 6 ackleys and 7 mag. And it still smells like either.
I am also interested in the Hodgon findings and hope the new powder cures your problem.

H-4831sc is NOT too slow for the 95gr Bergers.

I always smell the powder to see if it's legit :D

Anything could of happened with the powder after it left the factory and before you bought it so I wouldn't assume it's a bad batch just cause.

You did good to get a hold of Hodgdon, and if anyone else has a similar issue hopefully they stumble upon this post and see if their Lot # is the same as yours.
