Twist for new 284 barrel

Hi All,

It's that time again. Need a new barrel to start the season. I am taking off a 31" Brux 9 twist that shot pretty good! I've been using the 180 Berger Hybrids. I noticed that they now recommend a 8 twist and so does Sierra with the 183s. I'm a little nervous to make that jump. Anyone using an 8 twist and having success? or should I go half way with the 8.5 twist?

Thanks for any words of wisdom.

I have no trouble stabilizing even the 195s with an 8.5tw. This is in a 7rsaum. Even a 9tw in a 284 was able to stabilize the 195s. Not saying I would use the 9tw for the 195s just showing an example. An 8tw will also give you more torque to worry. I vote 8.5tw All barrels 32' Kriegers.

That's what I am leaning towards. Its kinda the best of both I think.

No question, if you were only to shoot 180s, stay with the 9tw. I only went for the 8.5tw in preparation for the 195s. They still have a few bugs in them. Maybe wait until they come out with a thicker jacket target version. Playing with the Sierra 183s, but I will stay with the 180 Bergers for bigger matches. There is always the Hornady 180s coming out with a BC of 1,000,000;)

Shot my 284 for the first time this weekend, 30 inch Krieger barrel with an 8 twist, shooting the sierra 183 match King's, first day of load development, this was 100yrd 3 shot group! Didn't even notice the torque!

55gr H4831sc about .015 off land, velocity was about 2815fps! Going to try some 180 hybrids this weekend, then fine tune my best overall loads!

9 will run both those options very well. 8.5 will as well but 9 twist is a better choice. Faster and longer barrel life also with a 9 twist. Another +1 for the 9.

Using Bergers twist rate calculator the Sierra 183gn running at 2815fps at sea level won't stabilise in a 9 twist.. I have an 8tw and some 183 Sierras, once I've burned out my 9tw with 180 Bergers I'll let you know how I get on with the 8tw/183Sierras.

Thanks for all the input guys.
I think I'm going for the 8.5. It shows that it is stable at all the elevations with the speed I'm gonna push them at. And should only increase torque minimally in my opinion.
Good shooting,

Funny how everyone's barrels shoot different. I shoot a 9 twist 29" broughton and it shoots the 183s well. Getting 2840 and excellent accuracy. Both 4350 and 4831 shoot well. RL 17 faster but not as accurate in that gun. Many guys on here shoot 75 Amax bullets in there 9 twist 223 guns and my 9 twist 223 won't shoot them. All you can do is give them a shot. No two barrels are the same.

My 9 twist runs 183 SMK's well at 1140ASL at 2,880 fps. I have a 8.25 twist enroute, so I'll report back if anyone wants to know what, if any difference there is.
Thanks,

Lloyd

I took my 8.5 twist off of my 22 lbs F-open rifle because I could not manage the torque for a whole match. I would shoot well but would have 4-5 flyers over the 60 shot match that would allow me to not win.

Switched back to my 9 twist and I lost the flyers caused by the positional errors related to the increase torque.
