barrel twist suggestion for .284

I am in the process of obtaining parts for a new build... a .284Win. This will be my first 7mm. I will use it mostly for 600 yards (including some F class), but occasionally for 1000 yards.

Hoping to be able to shoot 162 - 180 grain bullets, and would like opinions as to the suitability of 1:8, 1:8.5 or 1:9 twist barrel. I realize that one single barrel at a certain twist may not be optimal for my specified range of bullets. Barrel length will likely be 30-32". I am leaning toward the 1:9 at the moment for no particular reason other than availability.

Advise appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

For the 180gr at sea level (Florida) I would look into the 1:8.5 twist. 1:9 may not be enough to stabilize.
Check out the twist rate calculator on the Berger bullets web site.

I have had 3 1:9's and 1 1:8.75. All shot well, but the 8.75 appears to be better.

Shot 180 Berger Hybrid, 180 Sierra, 177 B.C.

I'm completing what you are starting. Went with 1:9 30". I think you are safe there - however, there has been some talk of Berger developing a 190-192 gr VLD/hybrid in 7mm. If that happens a 1:8.5 might be better. Maybe Bryan will give us some info.

Talked to Bartlein about this. I actually have barrels on order that will have a 1:9 gain to 1:8.25 twist. This will stabilize the potential heavier berger bullets as well as the 180gr hybrids.

Shooting 1-9 Broughton 5c, 180 Berger VLD's. I think most are shooting the 1-9 at the top levels. If the heavier 7mm's come to market, they are saying you will need a 1-8.5, but that's not reality yet and not sure when that will come.
