Remington 700 SS R5 Mil Spec

Looking at buying a Remington 700 SS R5 Mil Spec in .308. I had read in some older reviews that Remington was supplying actions with too long head space in these rifles seriously affecting accuracy. Does anyone know if this is still true?

I have owned and shot 4 of them. I sold 2 to good friends. Mine are great shooters for a factory gun. The issue is not headspace, but a long throat. I found the 168 Sierra didn't mind the jump too much but I shot most of mine single shot, with the bullet just off the lands. Mine are "older"guns. One is a tenth anniversary. Here's load work for The Hornady BTHP and 4895 at 100. Loaded at mag length. Shot off sand bags before I "really got into it". It's a good representation of how my guns shoot. Josh

I had one for a while and that gun shot everything well except the really heavy stuff(190+). It loved berger 185 but velocities were low. I regretfully sold it to my friend and he loves it.

If that were true about long or sloppy headspace they would have had a massive recall to repair them. Go to the Remington recall site located in the Remington country site and look it up. I never heard that before and they have been making them for quite awhile now so don't believe all you read on the internet when in fact the guys bitching might have over sized their brass and blamed the gun for the problem they created by not knowing how to set up the dies in the first place.

Mine had a really long throat, too. Made it hard to chase the lands as the round count got up there. It has since been corrected with a new (5R) barrel.

The action does not set the headspace - the headspace is determined when the barrel is fitted.

I did mis-speak. Its long throat that I had meant to describe. I had read several comments on that issue. I can't afford a custom so I am trying to make sure that what ever I buy is as right for me as it can be.

I bought a milspec 5R R700 308 and loved it.Gun shot extemely well with the 175SMK. I loaded them as long as the mag would allow. The throat was really long and i was jumping them alot but it sure didnt mind.Probably one of my favorite factory 700s but the bro in law talked me out of it.

Well, thinking out loud here: Remington's are ok. I've been shooting 3 or 4 different Tikkas lately. I like them more, due to the smoothness of the action along with accuracy equal to the Remington's I own.
Eurooptic is having a sale. I recently bought a nice T3 in 300 Win mag for $525. The last Remington 5R I bought cost a grand. A Tikka purchase would leave you with almost enough money for a custom barrel install. That's what I'd do. Josh

I like the T3X CTR but you can't get a 24" barrel .308. I didn't want to go through the hassle of custom just starting out. There are no smiths anywhere near me I would be shipping. I don't know good reliable smiths.

Never owned the 5R, but the sps varmint and tactical in 308 were always shooters for me. Did two easy jobs at my house, dropped them in bell and Carlson stocks and installed jewel triggers and they were .50 MOA at 100 yards all day. Took them out to 750 yards regularly. They are also cheaper than the 5R. Only limiting factor is the sps varmint is 12T. The sps tactical is 10T which shot the heavier 180+ bullets better.

Although, with My limited experience with the 5R I was impressed by them and shot a couple of my buddies rifles. Very nice. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Where are you located? I have an awesome smith in Macon, Georgia who does all my work with a two week turn around and very good prices. I can pass you his name and number if you're in the SE.

I owned one 5R .308, it shot the Berger 155s and 175 SMK extremely well. My cousin has it and loves it, zero issues with the rifle. That rifle is a good option, there are others too that we'll do a very good job and not cost an arm and leg. Winchester Heavy Varmints do a incredible job and can be had for 750-900 bucks.
