Two rifles only

CTK, I was taught that if it aint broke don't fix it.The 280 ai is a killing machine and plenty capable of killing the largest bull elk around when loaded with the right bullets.

Just faced the the same exact question with a buddy. He wants to build a 28 Nosler badly. He's read some reviews and heard some Nosler stories. He doesn't hunt anything that would justify the need for a big 7 but thinks he needs it for longer ranges. It's a huge increase in recoil for sure. Nobody really needs a reason to build a gun that they want that badly. I suppose I say just build it and enjoy it. The better question really boils down to his real question of use. A 280 or 7 mag would certain better suit him for his needs. The Nosler is a sweet option but one that is definitely more than he would ever need. I guess thats the question I would ask myself. Do I need the extra horse power ? Do you really want the recoil abuse (without a brake)? Or, Do I just want a Nosler 28 cause it's just a sweet choice to add to my collection. Seems as said above that a 280 ai or 7 mag mag just may do what's needed. Either way, again, building a 28 nosler is just a fun build and at least an addition to a gun collection.

What about a 284 Win and a 28 Nosler to replace the 280ai.:)

I used to face these type questions with fly rods. A good fly rod and reel can be in the 1k range. A guy can conquer most stream fly fishing with a 5 weight rod and most inshore saltwater with an 8 wt rig. Well they make 1 weight through 15 weight. Each one of these 15 choices is perfect for a particular fish and fishing situation. Same dilemma different sport.

Hey CTK: I have to admit I was wrong about you! At first, I took you to be a cheap "minimalist". Trying to cover all the bases with 2 guns. Now, I see you as a very reasonable guy that seems to have controlled his "urges" better than most of us.:) Besides, guys that shoot and fly fish have to stick together. I have a corner full of fly rods. I have a closet full of boat rods. Just the boating accessories fill half the attic. I have a "dirt bike" in my garage that I haven't ridden in 20 years. Yeah, I have too much stuff! :eek:No wonder my wife is "after me" about my hobbies!:rolleyes: My hat is off to you! I'm making a pledge to get rid of all my stuff. Where did I put my "Last Will and Testament"?;)

A few more to go, and I will be down to one rifle:eek: And with that one rifle, from mice to moose, I can do it all.

I have 7 fly rods. I am far from perfect. Just doing well with centerfire rifles.

Do you have a thirteen weight for the "once in a lifetime" sailfish trip. I actually took it out for yellowfin tuna once. Thank God I didn't hook one on it! We hit a school of 70 lbers. Then I tried to use it for Stripers. I thought my arm was going to fall off after 20 minutes. Now, it sits.

A 70 pounder is a baby.

I have never even owned an 11 or 12 wt. On the rare tarpon trip, I have borrowed a 12wt. I don't even especially like casting my 10wt. I spent 5 days with it in Baja throwing a fly the size of a mop head. Only caught one small Roosterfish from the beach. I could have had same result with an 8wt. I mainly use a 7 and 8 in saltwater. Bonefish, redfish, speckled trout, and small to medium snook. Have never gone for NE stripers. Know you need a 9 or 10 for those. I have used a 10wt for medium tarpon, big snook, kingfish, cobia, king salmon, and Cuberra Snapper.

A 70 lb. tuna is a 45 minute fight on a Penn 50, if you're lucky. I was an idiot for taking the fly rod. It only had 150 yards of backing.

I don't fish for sharks. I am also worried about their long term survival. I don't think sport fishermen are going to do them in but the commercial fleets probably will. That is an amazing shark. I have never seen a thresher shark.

Nah. This was on the Independence, and the weight exceeded 70 pounds by roughly 200 pounds. 30 minutes, and they were in the "death spiral".trip1531JACKPOTWINNERS.jpg

Just shy of 500 pounds;)

SoCal. The largest I boated was a 813 pound Mako. I have a video of the fight from the time it was hooked, until the time I brought it to the surface. Almost 5 hours of fighting. You'll find the largest Mako's in SoCal.
