22 BR

Very soon I'm having a custom rifle built, I'm leaning towards the 22BR. I assuming that the 22 has the same inherent accuracy as the 6MM counterpart? The velocities appear to be impressive. I was wondering if the slight loss in velocity over the 22-250 is made up for in barrel life? And has anyone got any experience with this round?

Thanks,
Josh

Go for it. I built one with a 1:12 twist Lilja barrel on a Rem. XR-100 action. It shoots almost every load I feed it well from 40 gr. to 60 gr. bullets. Easier on barrel than a .22-250 and mine outshoots all (5) previous .22-250's I have owned. I do not think you will be disappointed.

What twist are you looking at doing?

I have an 8 twist and love it. 75 bergers at 3250.

They are very accurate, low recoil and less noise than a 22-250.

One of my favorite cartridges for sure.

Proably a 1/9 or a 1/8. With the 1/8 do you have problems with jackets coming off with 50gr bullets?

I've never shot light bullets in mine so I can't verify that. You might have an issue with some however I know a 53 vmax will hold up in an 8 twist pushed very fast

GO FOR IT YOU WANT LOOSE ANYTHING TO THE 22-250 AND THE 22BR WILL HOLD IT OWN I HAVE 2 22BRS AND THEY SURPASS ANY 22-250 THAT BEEN ON MY PLACE BOTH ARE 1/12 AND THEY SHOOT WELL WITH THE 53 GR V-MAXS THESE ARE SWITCH BARREL RIFLES

My 22 BR is a slow twist 1/14 and I've actually had good luck with bullets up to 55 gr. Stacy, right up above me here just sent me some 52 gr. A-max's to try, and I am optimistic. I sometimes think that a lot of folks think that we've gotta twist barrels too fast these days.

My rifle, or me aint the ones to shoot groups in the .1's and .2's, but I'm getting pretty consistently in the 3', and 4's. -- AND I've hardly shot a single group over an inch. (100 yd, five shot)

I'd highly recommend a no turn neck diameter. Mine's tight, and kind of a pain. jd

Thank you everyone. I think I may end up with a 22. BR at some point but I think my needs necessitate a big 6MM. The XC it is I think. Loving the 22 BR too!

i have a 22 br with a 1/14 twist 25 in long barrel.it has sot in .25 in for 5 shots at 100 yards.loaded with 52 graing custon bullets.i killed groundhogs out to 300 measured yards .it is a easy cartrige to get to shoot.

I am planning a 22BR build for 90gr and had the same question. I called Sierra tech and he said they have tested all the way down to 40gr in 7:1 twist with no blowups.

I have a friend shooting 90 Bergers out of a 1-7" 6BR and it does very well. No bullets have gone "poof" yet!

Do you know the freebore your friend is shooting? I've switched from 6br to 6xc and thinking I'll take my dies and brass and build a 22br in 1:7 twist and shoot 90 bergers. What velocity is he getting?

I'm afraid I don't have any data. This guy is content to load a mid range load and go shoot. I struggled trying to get the 90's to shoot well in a 1-7" .223, and then decided to try the same bullet in a 22 BR. No more struggling- just great performance.

I'm building a 223 to shoot 90s but since I have a 6br sitting in the safe with a shot out barrel and a new 6xc that satisfies all my 6mm needs, I was thinking of building a 22br. I'll have the 90s and still have powder. Can I use 6br dies with smaller bushing or will I need to buy 22br dies?

I shot some very sweet 22 250's for over 30 years....then went to 22BR. I would never go back. Mine are 8 twist but a 7 twist is in future plans.
