Tikka 595 gets new 1/7 Brux

I sent a Tikka 595 up to Bob Green for a new 223 barrel, throated for Berger 80s. I took it to the range for some initial testing. I have to say that Bob does great work!! Tried Varget first, with Berger 80 grain VLDs touching the lands. Looks promising.

Thanks, Paul. I just mounted the barreled action in an old Master Sporter stock with the factory trigger. No bedding or fancy action work. Just a new barrel. I wanted to post this for the guys on a budget. I have to finish the new stock for it when I dig myself out from under my wife's "honey do" list. Then it will get bedded and "should" do better. I can still "do my part" but certainly not "all day long". Josh

Are you feeding them through a magazine? I had a rifle that Bob worked completely over and his work is simply outstanding.

I started at touching the lands and they were too long for the mag. I'm going to try some more 21.5 to 22, play with seating depth and see if they shoot at mag length. An interesting note were my sighter/fouling shot loads. They are my go to plinking load for a Remington. 55 grain Barnes hp over 22 grains h335. So far, this gun seems to want to shoot.
Bob Green does great work and he's a true gentleman, with the patience of a saint.

What for freebore did you use??
I am rebarreling a 223 to use only the 80VLD and I am having JGS make me a reamer with a .150 Freebore, the barrel I am using now has a .078 Freebore.

i believe the Wydle freebore is .112, that is the chamber i always used for the 75 Amax, SIE 80.

Josh I have an old 695 in 300WM that I hunt with. Those old Tikkas are great rifles, slick as silk with a great trigger. I'm also pondering a stock switch, nothing fancy for a hunter. Good luck with that 223; mine shoots the 80.5FB great with a bit of jump if you need a decrease in overall length.

Ok. I'll confess and take a hit. I don't know the freebore. It may be in the paperwork. I went to Bob's shop with all my parts. These were all the projects I'd been buying parts for, for a year and a half. 5 different actions and eight barrels. Being some what new to it, I answered all of Bob's questions about what bullets I wanted to use, neck dimension, etc. He was very kind and answered all my questions and took the time to teach me a few things, too. I was there more to learn what he thought I should do than what I thought the specs should be. For the 223, I told him I wanted to shoot 80 Bergers with a no turn neck, and left the details up to him. I mostly single feed, so asking for them to make mag length wasn't important to me. I'll dig out the paperwork and look. Josh

I have shot a bunch of 80VLD's, my goto load is 24.75 of Varget and .015 of jump. Mine is chambered with a .253 no turn neck and a .078 freebore, with the new .150 freebore my overall loaded length will be at about a 2.525, this will still feed from the mags I use.

Hi Charlie: The older 595s are one of my favorites. I wanted to see what one could do with a good, fast twist barrel. I looked for a 695 in 300 Win Mag. I didn't find any, then I looked at a sale at Euro optic and bought a new one to try. I'm wondering how the new ones compare to the old ones. We'll see. I'll be trying some Sierra 69s and some jumping with the Bergers, next time out. Thanks for the hope. Josh

Lapua brass lasts a long time at 24.75, I have went up to 25.75 with my ladder test. Velocity with the 24.75 load is right at 2900. This is in a Defiance Deviant with a 26", 1-8" twist Mullerworks barrel.

The brass life was one of my concerns with pushing the heavier loads. I'm using some sorted LC to see how long they last before investing in some Lapua. I've read and heard that pushing the 90s fast really cuts brass life so I went with the throating for the 80s. I just shoot for fun and like accurate rifles. I don't usually go for the higher velocity nodes after initial load testing. Josh

Here you go. I have a 22-250, also. The barrel is shot out so I'm putting a 30br barrel on it to try. I was going to do a 6br but I put that barrel on a Stiller.


The previous owner "refinished" the stock, so I'm making a new one about 6 inches longer. Kinda like these:
