338 Lapua Magnum Questions

I have a friend that has picked out this case to chamber as hunting rifle for western whitetail in the Dakotas, and an Elk outfit. I said i would help, and my first inquiry was about barrel tapers, and bottom metal, he wants flush bottom metal like a factory hunting rifle. I called Greg at Bugholes and he said he had heard of folks doing this with metal from Rigby. Is there another way to skin this cat. The Rigby bottom metal is like $400.00. The action will be a Stiller TAC 338. Thanks for any help.

Saddle up, cuz nothing will be cheap! Every component cost more, been there done that, got a 338LM!

I csnt help much on that kind of bottom metal, never build a rifle like that.

Barrel taper wise, just depends what the guy wants to do with it and how heavy..

Check the velocity dif between rem ultra mag and the LAPUA. Given equal barrel lengths the gain if any isn't worth the expense . Just my 2 cents .
I've got numerous 338 lap and rem ult mag , and ulta mag Ackley , now I've settled back to the 338 win wag . Broken collarbone! Yes I give up 200-300 FPS but it's about 1/2 the cost . And much less weight to carry

this doesn't show much , but this is the bottom metal I'm using . I have the exact same new in package , that I offered you .

I've built several based on these components.
Stiller/Tooley action, Wby 30-378 mag box and Rem BDL floor plate.
That gets you one in the chamber and two down.
I would build a 300 Norma and shoot Hornady's 212 ELD-X but that's just me.

What do you do different on your version of the action?

To be perfectly honest there is no difference except in the name. Most would be surprised how many actions are private labeled with nothing more than cosmetic changes.

200-300fps not worthwhile...? Keep going that direction and you'll end up with a 6mm Dasher.
